Just curious -- has anyone on this forum ever attempted to modify their Polk floorstanding speakers? If so, what was done and what were the results?

read my post from 4 15 its on the third page titled sda crs driver upgrade the morel nm 164 mid bass drivers are much improved over the 6 and a half inch polk drivers in my sda these are a perfect driver upgrade for any of the sda or moniter series polks .I talked to a tech at parts express who recomended them and also morel usa they play cleanly and much louder without the bottoming i had with the original drivers .they have double magnets and 3 inch voice coils and rubber sourounds.
    system includes polk sda
crs ,velodyne uld 15 sub, adcom gfa 555 amp and gfp 555 preamp and yamaha souround amp for center and rear channels

Would your experience with those drivers be applicable to the Rti series?

Not me personally, but several members have worked on their Polks.

raife has done as much modding as anyone 'round here. Particularly upgrading crossover components. Nice thread here on this, but buried in another topic...

I know F1 has upgraded to cardas 4-way posts. He's documented this at least twice in threads.

RussMan swapped out his SL2000 tweeters for the replacement SL2000T's

Is will be very hard to mod any driver component on the RT series unless you really know what you are doing....

First, the tweeter *mounts* into the baffle, and when I say mount - I mean pops in like a 20 dollar toy at walmart. Then the depth of the tweeter hole limits the magnet size, depending on which model you have ---

The midbass section has to have a flat ring (I guess thats what you would call it) so it can fit with the baffle -- since the RT series uses no screws in their drivers, it is all a matter of fit and letting the baffle and other materials to hold them in.

The crossover, atleast the RT35i would be easy to mod, but they glued the components to the board, so good luck there as well. The only really easy upgrade is wire, but then you have to be careful about your size of wire, because they cut a hole in the tweeter hole for the wire to pass through and it is only so big.

By the way, this is based on the RT35i, other madels may vary.

    Hope this helps :D

hi early the polks i moded were older sda with 6 1/2 inch mid bass drivers mine are held in with screws. im not familiar with the rti series the drivers i used for mine are a higher quality driver than the originals .the morel tower transmision line tower speaker that uses two of the same drivers in each one cost 4 grand a pair i bought 4 drivers from morel usa in brookline ma. for $304 I play a lot of rock and these play as loud as i can stand without bottoming out like the originals did on low bass notes
    system includes polk sda

I was going to try changing the caps on my monitor 5's to a Solen type cap ?
Has anyone tried this and will it give me a audible inptovement ?
The silver coil tweeter sounds really nice in those I just wonder if there is room for improvement ?
I dont drive these hard in fact they operate from 100 hz and up the subs take the low end .

Use Sonic Caps or Claritycaps, I'd avoid Solen.

George, been wondering the same about Brad myself. Phil and I were just recently talking about his absence.
