Fellow Polkies,

After nine months, it seems that at least one of my roommates is becoming a Polk fan. We just moved out, and he is offering to purchase my five R series speakers. Ironically, he called just as I was sitting and listening to them and wishing I had something better. So, should I do it?

Heres my deal though. I really like the LSi line. They are too expensive, however, for me to complete a full 5.1 setup. I could find some deals on RTi/RTxxi speakers, but then again, I would eventually be wishing that I had the LSis at some point. Should I just pass and wait until I have money? Sell, and maybe settle on a pair of LSi9s and do the 2 channel thing for a while?

Any thoughts?

Do the 2-channel setup for awhile. Get what you want, don't compromise because of cost, you'll always regret it.

    Just my .02 cents

I have an Onkyo TX SR600. If and when I went HT with LSi, I know I would have to get a new amp source. I am told it will "do okay" with a pair of LSis. Another option would be to use my new HK 3375 stereo receiver. It has preamp outs, and I did get it with the intentions of using it for 2 channel. I hate surround for music, so, the only sacrifice would be for movies. I would say I do HT:music 70:30. I could learn to deal with it.

I am hoping to get a little more than $600 for my R40s, CSi20 and R15s. Pretty similar to what I paid. They are in great condition though, so I feel its justified.

    Sean,

Thats what I figured, but was told otherwise by an LSi dealer. If I did go with a pair of LSi9's, I would switch over to the HK with the intent of finding a good 2 channel amp.

Ditto, look at it as building a new system piece by piece.

Well, after a nights sleep, heres where I am now. I think I'll keep my setup for the following reasons.

If I were to go to anything 'better' than the R series, it would require dipping into my wallet, and the wallet is pretty lean these days. Furthermore, I don't have time for a job, which means, there is also no hope for the wallet. If I sold my speakers, I would have pretty much $600 and $600 only to work with.

Also, my sub is a POS. Its more than adequate for movies, but, for sound it gets rather annoying when listening to anything besides crappy rock and rap.

Furthermore, for 2 channel, I really like my headphones. And with the money, I could get pretty much the best headphone set up I could imagine.

Furthermore, I will be a pharmacist in a year (knock on wood). At that point the loss I stand to take from unassing my R series will not be nearly as substantial.

Furthermore yet, I really do enjoy the R series. I know they're not the best, but they are still enjoyable. Okay for music, and better for HT.

So, in my friend's interest, I think I will just keep an eye out for a good used center and maybe some RTi bookshelves for fronts.

Thanks for sticking with me guys. Any thoughts? I realize that not everyday comes along where you can sell your gear a year later for what you paid. Maybe I am still drowsy and make no sense.

Patience is the key. It's also something I'm guilty of lacking on all too often.

My sub is a Sony WM40. It was my first piece of audio gear. My fiance works, and I think at least daily, she gets one plea from me to buy me a new sub. The thing is, we are in an apartment, and until we move out, we just can't get a good, loud, deep sub. Pretty much everything can be heard through the walls.

So, here is what I may do for my roommate. If he bought everything new, it would come to $670. Thats with R50s, which have a nice amount more bass to them than the 40s. Thats buying from CC and crutchfield. Plus, its brand new that way, and he has the upgrade policy. Or, if he doesn't want the R50s, I can still sell him my R40s, and I will get the R50s and get a fairly cheap upgrade out of the deal. Thats the plan for now. I think he is hesitant to buy used gear off our forum. Oh well, I think I could have found him some pretty good stuff.

    Thanks.

good move Shelby. wait till you can afford the set up you really want. since your system seems pretty well matched for now. i'd wait too. While two channel is nice.. it's not quite the same for home theater. Listening to a movie in 2 channel leaves a lot to be desired. imho

Well, this whole thing is over with. I'm suprised it only lasted this long.

Apparently no one likes timbre matching anymore. Crazy concept that timbre matching. Anyways, my roommate ended up buying the CSi3 for center, and a pair of R15s for surround duty. He is using some Pioneer monitors for his fronts with the best of intentions of replacing them with RTi8s at some point.

    Anyways, thanks for the comments.
