MMC650 - It says 6-1/2 on the box BUT...

I purchased the 6-1/2” MMC650

I have a 1998 VW GTI VR6 with stock 6-1/2” speakers. I had 6-1/2” MB Quartz which fit perfectly.
The MMC650s would not fit as they were 6-1/4” in diameter. The screw wholes were completely off.
Why are the speakers smaller than the advertised 6-1/2”?

The holes were even smaller in diameter and I could find no way for the speakers to be mounted.

Can anyone shed some light on why these will not drop in and fit? Instruction manual did not show how to mount into most car’s door panel cut out.

We have a dB 675 (6- 3/4" coax) for applications like yours (if it's not too deep). The MMC650 is built to the industry standard "6.5 inch" size. If you go to Crutchfield's website you'll see that they recommend a 6.75" speaker. I don't know who started it, but it's been that way for years.

yea that is weird. My MBQs measure exactley 6-1/2" freom edge to edge but my speakers are considered 6-3/4"? Thats too bad cuz I had my heart set on the 650s. Do you know if the DB series sound just as good or better?

    thanks!

DB is the line below MOMO
theyve been talking about extending the MOMO line though, you might want to wait...they might make a 6.75" momo speaker

The MM6 is an oversized 6.5" (6.75") that might work, but it might be too deep. Crutchfield doesn't recommend anything for that car, I'm assuming because of depth. With slight modification (cut out some plastic or metal) you can probably fit something they don't list.

That is true. I stuck a set of Momo 6x9s in the doors of my 02 Ram and NOBODY said they would fit. The problem with the Momos is the emmense size of the basket, about the size of a football. Well you will have to use a spacer (I made mine out a an old 6x9 mounting plate) and maybe even do a little hacking on the speaker hole in the door. However, I think it would be worth the effort. I would much rather have the Momo than the DB.
