Anybody else made fun of for putting money into this hobby?

This may just be because I’m in high school, but at least for me, it seems like I am 100% misunderstood. Every single one of the people I know (except for Bassfreak101) thinks I’m totally mad or something. They can’t imagine why I’ve put as much money as I have towards this hobby. They, of course, don’t pay attention to the fact that I’ve actually made money by reselling some stuff a while back.
I even have friends who think their phone speakers sound better. Then there are the people who think it sounds bad till the bass is turned all the way up.
Anybody else mad fun of? I will say, it is nice to come here and be understood by like minded people.

I get made fun of 24/7 by some guys here (in jest), and get headshakes at work (when my massive boxes show up). On the flip side I make fun of a few in this forum daily (always in jest).
As proof I show my "new" work setup.... a HK pre (holding for someone else), connected to a Little Dot tube amp, using my iPhone X or Dell Tablet as a source lol.... Those are Beyerdynamic DT-770 32 ohm headphones.... which means they dont NEED an amp..... but...... its me, so... yes they do.......
Why you ask.... because I'm nuts....The HK pre does nothing to help the chain by any means, but if I didnt have it hooked up, it would be sitting doing nothing in a box in my closet. Best to keep it running and out looking awesome..
My cubicle also has a Sherwood vintage AVR I used as a headphone amp initially as well....
I also listen at levels that likely would annoy my other cubemates if they all didnt have their own headphones in lol......

We have the balance in our car set all the way to the right, because the left front speaker’s surround come loose and it rattles, but dad won’t let me open it up to fix it.EndersShadow wrote: »I get made fun of 24/7 by some guys here (in jest), and get headshakes at work (when my massive boxes show up). I had one friend who came into my room, saw the gorilla coffin speakers, and just shook his head in mock disappointment. At least he appreciated the sound that came out of them. -
It's a somewhat esoteric hobby by modern standards.

Where's the turntable!? That would really blow their minds. My co-workers think I'm nuts too, BTW. -
I got that when I was your age... But I just had an argument with my wife why we most likely won't keep the Magnepans...
Her argument was... They don't take up that much space and they sound good
And I said... But we have to many speakers
And then I realized something was wrong with this

How has she not noticed those beauties? Those stand out pretty well in any room don't they?
Now those are as pricey as a nice car.

I gave her a check for some speakers I sold. I brought the speakers home after LSAF...made it look like I sold a swapped gear

I've heard them. Very few speakers have made me feel the emotion of the music from the artist. These are one of the few. -
I laughed pretty good at that maneuver.
SLICK.
Maybe if I try to start selling a bunch of my hoard, I can say I sold enough stuff to be able to afford my Tritons because of a yard sale pricing purchase. That's 1/2 true. Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them. -
Don't fret OP, like Doc said, this hobby is only understood by a small margin of people.
Some people spend money on games, cars, movies, audio...I just so happen to spend it on all =P
My wife didn't get it at first but now I think she'd miss the stereo more than I would if I had to part with it.Just a dude doing dude-ly things

I’m not at all worried about it, I’m just asking if y’all have similar experiences.
The difference between all those things (except cars) is that Audio is head and shoulders above the rest in price. I think that is what gets my friends, not that I have this stuff, but how much it’s cost me. -
If you really care what others think, you should strongly consider another hobby.

I honestly don’t.
Once again, I was simply asking if you guys have had similar experiences. -
First of all, good audio equipment doesn't cost, it pays. I cringe when I think of how many years I spent not having SDAs to listen to.
Second, I made it clear to the Mrs. that there were quite a few vices I could have, but don't.
She didn't buy it either, but it sounds cool anyway. So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

I agree, but my friends don’t. They think their phones sound better, and the fact that I’ve spent almost $400 on “inferior” equipment is staggering to them. On the other hand, I would gladly pay ten a hundred times that much if it meant good sound (and didn’t put me in monetary jeopardy)

I know a few gamers that have more invested in their games/rigs than I have in my audio gear. It’s all about priorities. The Gear... Good point, he said games and my mind went to consoles. -
Micah, good on you for not caring what they think man!
Next time someone questions why you spend so much on good gear, just ask them what kind of headphones they have plugged into their phones. When half of them say Beats, just nod, smile, and say ‘uh-huh’... -
If you want to get them interested, you just need to sell everything....
