Considered by many to be the holy grail. You should have bought it.

Ivan, it's at a store on the west side of North Prospect just south of I-74 in Champaign. I just popped in there looking for a couple of screws today and saw it. I hadn't known that they carry vintage stuff. They also have an old McIntosh MC-100.

That is a fine price, I'd opine, even with the cheap-jack output tubes.

The 8B (and, I must confess, I cannot tell an 8 from an 8B from the top... if it's from 1962, it may well be an 8) is one of the best sounding storebought amplifiers I have ever heard, full stop.

Phenomenal amplifier -- gorgeous below decks, too.

It would have come home with me for $1600 assuming it works (more to the point, as long as the transformers are all good).

Ol' Art Dudley (bless his heart) does a good job of 'splainin' the difference between the 8 and 8B. I have only, myself, heard and worked on an 8B -- and I love the things.

EDIT: Derp it is an 8B, I should actually read the tag that the OP went to the effort of photographing! The 8B is the one to have (except for a completist collector, I'd opine).

I should say that the Marantz 9 monoblocks were certainly prettier :p (freaking gorgeous, in fact -- timeless) and more powerful, but I just think electronically the 8B was considerably more elegant than the push-pull parallel EL84 Marantz 9. :|

I may someday invest in an 8B -- not likely to ever be in a position to spring for a pair of 9s, though... so maybe it's just sour grapes on my part ;)

In case any of y'all don't know of 'em, the MC-100 is half of an MC-2100. I think these autoformer-coupled, early solid state Macs all sound absolutely terrible - grainy and un-musical. The 50 wpc MC-250, too, IME/IMO.

An MC-100 might make an OK subwoofer amp, but it's probably overpriced for that application, I'll bet ;)

Full disclosure - there is an MC-2100 here, but it just sits in a box in the basement, taking up space :|

If any of y'all are interested in the Marantz I'll be happy to ask their best price, audition it and ship it to you. I actually told the guy that I wanted to make the photos because I had a friend (I didn't say a bunch of friends!) who might be interested in it. They're apparently selling it on consignment.

    Audio royalty.
"Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Measurements can provide a measure of insight, but are no substitute for human judgment. Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. Differentiation by numbers is for those who do not".--Nelson Pass Pass Labs XA25 | EE Avant Pre | EE Mini Max Supreme DAC | MIT Shotgun S1 | Pangea AC14SE MKII | Legend L600 | BlueSound Node 3 - Tubes add soul!

Damn, guys. You're making me feel small for not genuflecting as I entered the store! :)
