    Yep, signal to noise ratio was poor -- one thread I detected was using inductive rather than hardwire coupling (i.e., transformers). Transformers got a bad rap in the 1960s (along with tubes and high sensitivity loudspeakers). It took many folks, like five or six decades to recognize the bill of goods they'd been sold with transistors.
