WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former NFL player Pat Tillman was killed Thursday while serving as an Army Special Forces soldier on a mission in southeastern Afghanistan, Pentagon officials have told CNN.
Tillman, who walked away from a $3.6 million contract as a safety with the Arizona Cardinals to join the military after the Sept. 11 attacks, was in an area where numerous U.S. troops have been killed in battles with suspected al Qaeda and Taliban fighters.
He was serving as an Army Ranger, part of the Army's Special Forces. Tillman played for the Cardinals from 1998-2001.
What a brave and honorable man he was. My prayers are with his family today.

As someone said on another forum sums it all up:
"Agree with the policies of the administration or not, we all need to recognize what a huge sacrifice all of our troops are making overseas." -
Pat Tillman is a patriot. RIP.

What a terrible loss for our country. This man died for our freedom as well as many many others in history. My prayers to his family and all the troops defending our freedom. As an American veteran I weep inside, but Thank You Pat Tillman.

Tradgic loss. At least he was doing what he really wanted to do, and what he wanted to do was such an honorable thing. To give up the lucrative NFL lifestyle to serve his country speaks volumes of his charachter. This is a sad loss for our country indeed. God Bless the Tillman family and his brother still serving our country.

How sad. He didn't have to go, yet he sacrificed the ultimate price for his country.
I wonder if he knew some who was killed in the World Trade Center?
Just one of a kind. Heartfelt prayers go out to his family!RTi70 Fronts

One thing i'd like to add is that all the others are just as important as him. Leaving a multi-million dollar contract on the table is nothing to shake a stick at, but neither is leaving a wife and 2 kids at home. Just irks me that the media acts befuddled at why guys like this make the choices they do.

He joined late, to make a difference, and ante'd up with his life. College money walkers always made me ill....they should learn something from this kind of sacrifice.
Excellent comment Demi....there are many others unlike him, that gave up just as much.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
I was watching ESPN and I saw a clip of the Arizona Cardinals president saying how "courage, hero and honor..." get overused in sports all the time and how after Tillman, and the other soldiers, it doesn't mean squat.
I agree with Demi, but, I found Tillman's actions of patriotism very inspirational. Not that others stories wouldn't be inspirational also, his just happened to get published. -
A man with a true conviction who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country and the American way. A hero among many other heros who have done the same, my hat is off to them all.Political Correctness'.........defined

Somehow the fact that Clarett and Williams can't pursue their dreams of becoming millionaire football players this year and Manning is picky about where he wants to play seems just a little petty right now...doesn't it?"Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

From what I've seen, heard, and read about this man I think he would rather be remembered as an American that died serving his country while tying to make the world a better place for all. The fact that refused to grant any interviews after enlisting speaks volumes about his character.
The next time I sit down to watch a football game with my son and we talk about the great players, I'll remember to tell my son about Pat Tillman, the only NFL player that I can truly call a roll model. He and his brother walked away from a dream and into a hellhole, and they did so because they believed in giving back to this country. No they are not the only ones that have done so, but because of them, many will have a better understanding of the word Patriot.
Here's to all of the Fallen Heroes, regardless of their Color, Creed, or Religion. Here's to the Men and Women that have made the ultimate sacrifice for all of us.

The real tragedy is how much brains this guy had. Apparently extremely intelligent, carried a near 4.0 GPA his entire educational career, and scored almost off the charts in a number of aptitude tests. Probably could/would have been a great military leader and strategist for our country. Regardless, an inspiration and example for everyone on how to lead a selfless life dedicated to God and country. He will be missed by many."What we do in life echoes in eternity"

Truly a great loss for his family and this country. This man could have had the American Dream, instead he gave his life to protect that dream and give others in this world a chance to taste freedom.
God bless him and our prayers goe out to his family. -
