Looks like the Monitor 5s are plentiful vs the Monitor 7s in my area. Anyone compare the 2 side by side? Im sure the 7s go deeper but honesty Im not a huge bass guy.

I have 5's now and had M7's previously. Both with the same tweeter (SL2500). The 7's were a little big for my bedroom setup, but I definitely liked them better. I don't think the 5's give up too much to them though.

Bass was better with the 7's and the soundstage wider, but since I mostly use them for TV and movies, more than music, I am not a good barometer perhaps.

The 7's are great speaker, hard to come by though, at least in my area. Came across a one owner pair a year or so ago on Craigslist, first I had seen in years. Wanted $90.00 no problem, scooped them up.
The best way to predict the future is to invent it.

The Monitor 5s were/are just fine. If you can find the original morph, with Peerless tweeters... well... you could do far worse.

I had 5s with peerless tweeters. In a nearfield setup (desk) I preferred them without a sub; one of the only pairs of stand-mount speakers I have even preferred to run subless. Love the tight, textured bass they put out, and in a small-to medium sized room I think they are quite satisfying.

Have never heard the 7s unfortunately, but I would love to have a pair someday!

The 5 doesn't give up too much to the 7; both are IMO nicely balanced top to bottom with good, musical timbre (for lack of a better word). :|

Well, they have the infamous "silver coil" tweeter (EDIT SL2000 -- derp) and they're "Jrs" (smaller cabinets and smaller PR). I believe they're fairly inarguably inferior to the original Monitor 5 -- but they're also eighty bucks, and they won't be bad (depending on how you feel about those tweeters... I can tolerate 'em).

    Your call, I'd say.

I had those 5jrs with those tweets. NO NO NO! Very bright, noticeably less bass. Very unbalanced sound, kinda like rti4s, but bigger and uglier. Just imho of course ;)

Hold out for 5s or 7s with peerless unless you are going to upgrade the tweets.

Which can (still) be done, right?
    (upgrade the tweeters, that is)

:D. Looking closer at the cabinets 40 may be on the high side.

Near field, 5jr+ (which is what they are) are not bad at all if you feed them current. I have a pair (series 2) in the kitchen and they fill that 15x15 area very well and I find that the bass needs to be pulled back just a touch for correct balance.

    IMHO, YMMV

I think mine are Series 2. They have the SL-2500 tweeters.

What's the problem with the cabinets? It's kind of hard to see much in the one head-on pic. I'd be a little concerned that maybe they've spent a great deal of time in damp conditions with the heads of the screws on the faces of the tweeters being so rusted out.

How close to I-85 are you?
Expect that there will be bumps in the road. Choose to not let them rattle you.

    Polk - Monitor 10As, SDA 2Bs, LSi9s, White RTi4s, S4s, M3s, various centers.
    Boston - CR7, CR6s, CR4s.

I ask because I occasionally travel to Auburn or Biloxi from metro Atlanta. If I decide to sell a Monitor 7 pair I could potentially meet you near I-85. Mine are Series 2 with the SL2500 tweeter, which is very nice. They're also upgradeable without crossover modifications to the (I hear) even nicer RDO-198 tweeters.

I regret selling mine years ago, haven’t seen a set since around here, plenty of 10’s but I have a set, and there are three sets on CL right now not too far from me..
