Sad news from our little town: end of an era, our farmer-neighbors are exiting commercial dairy ops

Milk is my crack! I drink 2-2 1/2 gallons a week of Oberweis. I don't know if it's organic or not but, it's the best milk I've ever tasted.
Now your talking, I only drink their milk. Consider it organic without the label. Plus they don't ultra pasteurize the crap out of it.
I've had this discussion with the Oberweis people....they hold themselves to the same organic standards just don't pay that fee to officially label it organic. It's obvious in the taste of the Milk and to me it tastes better than other brands labeled organic.HT SYSTEM-

Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone
Recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) is a synthetic (man-made) hormone that is marketed to dairy farmers to increase milk production in cows. It has been used in the United States since it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993, but its use is not permitted in the European Union, Canada, and some other countries. This document summarizes what is known about the product and its potential effects on health.
What is recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH)?
The human form of growth hormone, also called somatotropin, is made by the pituitary gland. It promotes growth and cell replication. Bovine growth hormone (BGH), also known as bovine somatotropin (BST) is the natural form of this hormone in cattle.
Recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) or recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST) refers to bovine growth hormone that is made in a lab using genetic technology. Some rBGH products on the market differ chemically from a cow's natural somatotropin by one amino acid. Both the natural and recombinant forms of the hormone stimulate a cow's milk production by increasing levels of another

No growth hormones here...…………….
Simplicity is at the heart of every bottle of Oberweis milk because less processing leaves more room for flavor and delivers a healthier product that's better for your family. That means no artificial hormones, like bovine growth hormones, are permitted on our farms and no added preservatives or antibiotics are ever found in our milk. We gently heat our milk to the minimum temperature to retain the most nutrients. We call this gentle pasteurization, and you'll taste the benefits! But none of this matters unless your milk is fresh, so we pick up our milk from our farms every single day of the year and it is processed, bottled and delivered to your doorstep, often within 36 hours of milking. Healthier, tastier, fresher milk - that's what has made the Oberweis name the most trusted in dairy since 1927. -
My parents, when I was very young, had milk in bottles delivered to their doorstep on the side of the house. Charles chips were also delivered to the side door.
The good ol days.
It seems like Oberweis is still carrying on that great tradition.

We had a little galvanized box outside that the milkman put cartons of milk into up until 1970 or so.
And as far as drinking milk? WTH is wrong with people?!?!?!

I remember those! We would get milk, eggs, and bread delivered weekly. HAHAHA I forgot about the eggs. Another food item I wasn't particularly fond of. Now, ask me about what prizes came in which boxes of cereal in 1973 and I can rattle off the answers like my times tables. -
Sad News Doc!
I hate to hear that and can understand how you feel growing up as I have! from my friends through out Kansas and my Uncles in Arkansas fighting to save and keep there chicken houses in Arkansas and other selling off their family lands we always use to hunt and fish and camp on and party and hang out with them on.

Here's an old dairy farmer of counterculture fame.
His milk bottle shown below sold for $325.00 on the bay! There are usually several for sale.
Dehydrated milk, just add water! -

for real?
I'm not an authority on these but it looks like Yasgur Dairy milk bottles from the Woodstock era 1969 bring the top dollar. You might get lucky and find one Janis Joplin drank her Southern Comfort from. It looks like there are reproduction bottles and post 1970 bottles that sell for much less.

When I was a kid, we used to tip those upside down and blow them up with Cherry Bombs. -
Must have been one heck of a cherry bomb....those old time metal milk containers were pretty sturdy.HT SYSTEM-

Yeah, they actually went up in the air (pretty far) rather than getting blown apart.

I think that's how Wernher von Braun got started, you know?

That looks like some of my buddies' older brothers who got us started. Lol.

I'm old enough to have seen M-80's disintegrate mailboxes to shreds! And also to see a small pool of water get blown out of its crater. Leaving tad poles wondering what just happened? If they were alive.
I must've been 12 around then.Post edited by [Deleted User] onMost people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.
