Digital cable TV issue

I just installed a new 4K UHD 65” Sony to replace my 1998 32” Panasonic TV. A few years ago Comcast went all digital, and they provided a little gizmo to convert digital to analog for us old TV owners.

For the new TV I just ran the cable straight to the TV thinking it would be digital ready. However, the only digital channels the TV finds are music and talk. There are no regular TV channels with video. I had to hook up the gizmo again, and let the TV find the analog channel.

This doesn’t seem right. Shouldn’t the TV be able to ‘see’ the digital channels? Or does Comcast need to give me a different gizmo for digital?

I would expect this TV to be ready for anything.

Not all TV's have an OTA tuner now....
Ok i see yours does. What are you using for an antenna?
You should not need the gizmo

Hey Bud, is the gizmo a mini box with a cheapie remote?
COX did that around here. I don't remember why, but yeah, you can't even get basic cable TV service without it now, if I'm not mistaken.

What has happened in the interim between your TV purchases has been the fact that all of the cable companies have transitioned to digital encryption of their digital channels. That way you can no longer receive any pay channels for free. You need either a cable box, or a device which has a cable card slot (a VERY controversial deal that Panasonic brokered with the cable industry in order to get them on board with HDTV programming-as they were dragging their feet about retransmitting it over cable. It was controversial because they did it behind closed doors and then surprised everyone with it) Not too many devices come with those anymore besides TiVo boxes, which replace your cable box(*and is WAAYYYY better as far as I am concerned*)
So it ain't your TV, it's Comcast.

Okay, yeah, similar. I think there's an activation process on these, as well. Might be with the box or online, or... by phone (bah)

LOL. No matter what, there is always something.

    As Roseanne Roseannadanna says,

“Well, Jane, it just goes to show you, it's always something — if it ain't one thing, it's another."

I remember that and she would go off on this long rant and then Jane Curtin would jump and ask her what the hell she was talking about!!! :o:s
