DTS better?

I used to think DTS always sounded better, but with my current setup DD seems better. DD has a higher volume output (switching to DTS lowers the volume for some reason), and has a greater bass impact. My current DVD player, although expensive, only has a DTS digital out, not a built-in decoder. Could this be the reason? My receiver is of high quality and DTS sounds great, but better? Not quite. I know it should though.

Have you tried various DVD's with DTS? Like Gladiator, Undercover Brother, etc, to see if you get the same results?

Could be your settings. What kind of receiver and DVD player do you have?HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

DTS does have less volume. But much more seperation and clarity.
In higher end setups this becomes very noticable. Bass is more defined and cleaner also. In "home theater in a box" setups DD WILL have an edge over DTS. In a reference HT DTS IS clearly the winner - especially DTS-ES.

Thanks for the info, knowing that DTS typcially has lower volume output helps. I have a polk audio speaker system (RTi10's, CSi5, and FXi3's), an Onkyo TX-SR701 reciever and a Denon 1815 DVD player. I have bass management set to 80Hz crossover, front speakers large, but I'm not sure what else I can do to optimize performance. I still feel that DD has more impact than DTS with my current system. Could it be the DVD player, or something else?Current System:
