What FM antenna/s has/have worked for you?

I've had success with these Terks. I've also liked and still use the ol rabbit ears and plastic tee ones.

And this one is awesome; The white fuzz is not on the original picture! That corrugated back plate folds down and there are two dials on the right side to help with dialing in the stongest signal.

    Yes an FM Yagi with plenty of altitude and a rotator -- but good ones are harder & harder to find. I bought a little FM directional from MCM some while back (before they got sucked up by Newark) -- haven't put it up yet, though.

    Meanwhile, I am using this little guy to listen to the one station we usually listen to.

    What do you do to prevent lightning strikes from entering what's hooked up to them?

    My subdivision doesn't allow external aerial type antennas. Yeah I know. Association Boards. Agree with Dogg, Winegard 6065 is highly touted. I too am am in search of a killer indoor antenna.

    Outdoors and up high hasn't failed me yet. I even had good luck doing this in the past with a simple dipole spread out on a stick and placed up high.

    Lightning arresters at the grounding block.
    You could also drive a 12' ground rod in the ground with 6ga solid copper.

    My antenna tower is 35' tall with a deep fringe channel master OTA antenna good to 80 miles for FM and much further on great days.
    Not once in 30 yrs have i had a strike but there are was to minimize problems.

    Is it still available? I looked on Winegard's site and only see a 'turnstile' type omni.

    There do seem to be a couple of serious FM Yagis (or log periodics) on Google -- but I know nothing about most of the ones I saw, like this one (that I found looking for the Winegard):

    Naw, discontinued. There was a NOS on eBay that recently sold. I did see the Denny antenna too, looks like a close facsimile.

    One could always make their own... Not difficult and you can tailor the length to pull in the frequency you want more effectively than the mass built units. Most single pole or loop antennas are built to sit dead in the center of the FCC allocated bandwidth... Not so good if the station you want is on either side of that spectrum.

    A quick read of the Denny's page suggests it is a repurposed TV Yagi -- the FM band, as youse guyses likely know, lies between the old analog TV channels 6 and 7 in the VHF spectrum.

    It's no more, and no less, than two center-fed dipoles at right angles to form a more-or-less omnidirectional antenna. No gain.

    Not a bad antenna, but a far cry from a good, high gain, directional antenna.

    Yeah, a tuned dipole ain't a bad antenna at all :) I keep a mess of 300 ohm twinlead "in stock" for such projects. In fact, if anyone wants to build one and wants a hank o' twinlead, send me a note. I can certainly spare some.

    to calculate wavelength when you know the frequency, all's you need to know is the speed of light in a vacuum :) which is 300 million meters/second (slightly faster than a Dodge Demon)

    so, in our case, e.g., a station at 89.5 MHz (WVPR-FM in Windsor, VT) has a wavelength of

    (300 x 10^6 meters/sec) / (89.5 x 10^6/sec) = 3.352 meters

    and "lambda/4" (1/4 wavelength) = 0.838 meters = (about) 33 inches.

    Note that one of those references above is for a 5/8 wave dipole (as opposed to a half-wave dipole).

    A good one is hyperdirectional -- and that's a good thing :)
