Remodeling our basement...

Takes a lot of freaking time!! Especially when you have a job... :/

Seriously I’m on week 10, finished the bathroom a couple weeks ago, pulled up the old carpet, run speaker wire through the walls, cut two holes in the ceiling for Atmos speakers, redoing the cable for the tv (some other douch did such a great job installing) patching holes, pulled all the baseboards, you know all the fun stuff. I am actually enjoying it I just wish it went faster..

My big issue is wondering if I put my newly painted baseboards in before the carpet is installed..

Looking forward to having our HT room back together, Octane Seats are to be delivered next week...

Larry, Normally the Base Trim is installed before the carpet. Leave about a 1/2" gap between the bottom edge of the trim and the floor.

You can go back and touch up any imperfections that will come from installing the carpet.

Here the scoop with the baseboards....you can install it about a quarter to half inch up from the floor prior to carpet going in. The pad will get cut about even with the board, and the carpet gets tucked under the board. Then you can fill in all the little nail holes and paint over it...no risk of dripping paint on new carpet. BUT, the carpet installers will scuff up sections of the board during the installation. Then you have to go back and touch up those sections. Almost a lesser of 2 evils, but I opted to paint it all first so it went quicker....nobody will see a bit of paint on the sub floor. After reading your post again....putting them in after the carpet would be a PITA. Hope this helps

I hope you're not putting carpet pad in your basement unless you want a moisture sponge under your carpet...

Install the bb now. They will direct glue to your slab floor. Leave bb 1/4" off floor so you don't wick moisture. Touch-up scuff marks after installer leaves.

If the floor has been sealed that shouldn't be a problem correct?

Depends on the basement, I would opine.

My thoughts, FWIW, (as a biochemist, not a geologist or hydrologist, much less a house buildererator) -- If there isn't an hermetic seal between the foundation walls and the slab, water will find its way in if there is any in the surrounding soil. Water is still ;) noncompressible, so if there's any sort of pressure on it (say a few billion tons of soil), it will become... heh... a force of Nature.

Of course @mrbiron lives in eastern MA -- and eastern MA, to a good approximation, is a swamp. Virtually all basements in MA (most of New England, in fact) have issues with moisture incursion at some point in the year, even if it is just dampness (humidity).

Funny here in Utah we put humidifiers on our HVAC units.

I will more than likely put the baseboards in before hand, in my younger years when I did carpet jobs, the baseboards were always in place..

Yes we are putting padding down, there was never any issues with the padding that was there, no issues taking it up, I don’t see there being a problem, if water gets in you’re kinda fu€ked anyway..
