Yes! I've been looking forward too it. Heard real good things. Gotta get the DTS version, although it costs a bit more.

    How would you rate it?

Loved it. I agree with the comment about the ship-creaking sounds really putting you "in" the locations. The canon blasts and wave crashes are some serious bass expositions as well....and it was a great movie to boot!

All right guys! I take my words back and I was wrong. It is worth to pay extra and get 2-Disc version than single disc version.

I loved the M&C-FSOTW 2-DISC Edition so much that I ended up paying extra bucks for it instead, of single disc version. It includes a map, booklet and second disc with lot of extras. It is also heavy and looks great like a book.

    I vote for 2-Disc Editon!;)

The woman and I got it and watched it last night rather than this weekend. I took the plunge and bought the 2-disc version. SOUND WAS INCREDIBLE! Well worth the X-tra money, IMO.

I liked it - good character development, complex interplay between the main characters, solid acting, beautiful cinematography, awesome sets and special FX, and exciting action scenes.

The lack of EE in the picture was a blessing compared to Pirates OTC (ugh). Overall the visual presentation was nicely muted and very film-like - a pleasure to watch.

SQ was outstanding - it responded very well to force matrix (DTS-ES), with tons of rear channel effects. Surround effects and transients were sharp during the battle scenes (a dts hallmark), and vocals were clear as a bell. Cannon blasts were deep and very powerful, as were the waves crashing overboard during the storm.

Overall, nicely done and a solid addition to the movie collection. Doc's rating 8.5/10.

BTW: Though the DVD doesn't seem to make any mention of it, Master And Commander was theatrically released in DD-EX according to Dolby's website. Usually, this means the DTS track is DTS-ES Matrix, even if it isn't flagged as such, since the same master with the matrixed surround info was used. It definitely sounds like it!

And BASS? Jesus... this may be my new demo disc when people ask why I got the SVS. The cannon fire is amazing!

My extras disc was on a spindle, but Best Buy was putting limited edition discs with trailers and a 30 minute documentary in paper sleeves inside their copies. As far as I know, this was a BB exclusive. You sure that's not what you have?

MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD 2-Disc Edition Review!

PICTURE QUALITY: The film quality is razor sharp and colours are more natural and life-like. High-Defintion transfer definitely shows its strength here. No NTSC artifacts and grain appearance visible. One word, top notch transfer!. Shadow details and night scenes were done perfectly. The fog scenes were very delightful and breathtaking to watch. Overall a historical gem which takes you back in the time.

SOUND QUALITY: Not a flagged "DD EX" or "DTS-ES" but I had to force it on my Yamaha RX-V1400. Soundtrack is really astounding and powerful. Very detailed and refined and more true-to-life. LFE is very deep and clean. If you want to demo a true CANNON sound on your home theater system this is the movie you're looking for. Surrounds were louder and more noticible and quite enveloping and active. Overall a solid representation of the state-of-the-art soundtrack.

Thost square-rigger cannon battles are my new demo scenes. It doesn't get much better or more real.

The 2-disk SE is reminiscent of the Lord of the Rings box sets, very nicely done.

    Damn fine film!

Watched it this weekend twice and enjoyed the picture a great deal. Being a bit of an old salt myself I like a good sea-faring picture anyway, great cannon and fighting sequences even mixed in with classical music. Loved it when Crowe found the music score on the Acheron and stopped to look at that amongst everything else.

I would love to see another one, the door is open for it.

I agree with the others about the PQ and found the many little sub-plots very entertaining.

    RT1 gives a 9 out of 10.:D
