Enough Power?

I have two Infinity kappa 120.3se subs each with it's own 200 watt mono alpine amp. Each of the subs is svc(single voice coil). I was told by someone that if I were to hook another sub to each of the amps, the would recieve the same power as if one is hooked up. I was wondering if this is true, and if it is how exactly does this work.

You give some good info..but lack important details.

What ohm are the svc's? what ohm are you running the amp at? If its at 4ohm load now...if you add another sub..will the amp handle 2hm mono?

basically...if you add another sub to each amp...eac sub will get 100w.....probably wont be any louder then what you have... and may possibly sound worse since now your sending the subs less power

I assume youre talking about te V Power series Alpine mono amp (MRP-M350). That one is rated at 200 rms at 4 ohms and 350 at 2. However Performance Auto Sound did a test on that amp and at 13.8 volts it put out 248 rms at 4 ohms and 426 at 2! This little amp is a hoss especially considering its size, build quality and -$200 price tag!

If you are running this amp to one sub with a single , 4 ohm voice coil then its putting out the 248 at 4 ohms. If you hook another single, 4 ohm voice coil sub to it then it will crank out 426 total and each sub will get 223. It has to be a single 4 ohms voice coil though. Anything more will drop the amp below 2 ohms and youll fry it. For instance a dual, 4 ohm voice coil sub.

The amps that I have are 200 mono at 2ohms, their last years model of the mrpm350. Peak I think is 300 at 2ohms, however I don't think that matters. As far as the subs, infinity only says they are 4ohms, but don't all mono amps run at 2ohms?

This is the infinity webpage for the subs

Yeah, thats the amp I was talking about. Its rated at 200 at 4 ohms but actually puts out 248. And at 2 ohms puts out the 426 rather than the rated 350.

Mono amps run at either 4 or 2 ohms depending on the load you place on them. Hook up 1 sub and theyre in 4 ohms, hook up 2 subs and theyre at 2.

OK, now the subs are single voice coil and are 4 ohms. That means that each amp is putting out 248 rms to each because its running at 4 ohms. If you hook up another Infinity sub to each amp then each amp will be working in 2 ohm mode and will be putting out 426 total rms which will be 213 to each sub.

yeah, if you put two 4-ohm svc subs on a single 2-ohm stable monoblock, they'll each get the same amount as one 4-ohm sub on the same amp; this is because (in case the previous descriptions were unclear, which they weren't, but it bears repeating) when you wire the 2 subs in parallel, this allows the amp to put out twice the power (roughly), which is then divided between the two subs.

net result - to the original question, 'yes'
