How far away can I put the center channel?

Hello,
I have had a pro-logic setup since 1995. I recently upgraded my receiver to Dolby Digital 5.1. My center channel is a "CS250s" from
1995. It just fits on top of my Sony 32" TV which is in an armoire. Since then I have upgraded my front speakers to RT800's.
I would really like to get the CS400i for my center, to match the
800'S, but there isn't enough room to put it anywhere in the armoire because it is 8 5/8" high. I could put it on top of the armoire, but then it would be about 17" above the TV, and about 2.5 or 3 ft. above the RT800's. Will this work, has anyone tried this?
Does anyone have other ideas about placement? Or should I just get the CS245i and put it closer to the TV. I don't think the
245 will match the 800's as well. What do you think.
Any opinions would be appreciated---Thanks---

The 400 would definitly sound better with the 800's
It's ok to be out of the armoire.
On top works for some people.
My girlfriend likes it there.
I tend to put it wherever it fits best.
As long as you point it downward a little,
so that it points directly at the sweet spot.

Thanks for sharing this info Luc!Chris -
nice post luc, i have my 400i above the entertainment center, also would not fit in the space provided for a center above the TV. i also have mine mated with 800i's. it sounds great the way i have it set up, the 400is i probably about 14-16 above the rt800i's, tilted downwards slightly towards listening position. this should work fine for you as well...

Would it sit on a 16"-24" stand in front of the tv, just below it? You have to make do, I understand, but take the lesser of 2 evils. Choose a position where the tweeters on the 800's and the 400 are as close to 'level' as possible. If on top, I agree with angling it toward the listening area.

Thanks for all the info. Putting the center under the TV would certainly be closer to the 800's, but the bottom part of the armoire
has doors that swing open and house my receiver, cd player, tape deck. If the stand could move this might not be a problem.
Although I think my wife will definitely not like anything out of the armoire. This is probably not negotiable.
The top of the armoire is about 72". As you guys know the RT800's are 41" to the top. This gap seems very large. -
31" is getting to be a consideriable 'gap' betweenthe tweeter heights. is there anyway you can modify the armoire? possbily move a shelf up or down above the TV to fit the center, or is that a no-no from the wife as well... i definitely think you would be much happier withe 400i vs. the 245i, you should definitely find any way possible to mount it in and 'ideal as possible' location....
good luck...
