Conrad Johnson vs. Carver Amp

edited March 1 in 2 Channel Audio
Well as every newbie Polkie should, I've been reading a lot of threads here on CP regarding Amps.

I just read @Clipdat's thread (of which will not be named) and well, I'm exhausted! First amps, now audio racks. Karma needs to befall on you @Clipdat!

So, along my amp journey, I migrated from a SAE205a, Carver M1.0t (common ground), and now rocking a Carver TFM35x on my 1C's. The 1C's are bone stock except the RDO-194 tweeter upgrades and mortite sealed driver interfaces (as far as I know, have not popped the PR out yet to take a look under the hood).

I am looking at a used Conrad Johnson MF2300, factory refurbished and upgraded to the "A" designation.

I listen to mostly rock music, from metal to symphonic. I was reared in the prog rock era of the 70's and 80's.

Is the CJ a good amp for this type of music? Any Polkie's out there have experience with this amp. I only found one post back in 2014 in the FS classifieds here in CP, with only a few accolades on the purchase.

Fellow Polkies please opine!

Is there any particular reason that you've narrowed it down to a CJ amp, versus other brands?

Just trying to get an idea of your thought process or the research that you've done so far. :)

That CJ amp driving the SRT's blew my sack back. Yeah, it does rock music very well.

I seen the pics from Polk HQ and @f1nut reminded me of it. I know they're a highly regarded company, lot's of accolades out there.

I was actually looking at the (name not to be mentioned) amp, Bryston, B&K, that all have raves here on CP.

Some other Polkies have run CJ's here too, all good mentions.

Just continuing my research on my own is a little tough without actually listening to em. Like you I wanted to reach out.

I am a huge fan of Conrad Johnson amps. Apparently, so is like every audiophile in this part of Iowa since any time one comes up for sale, people will gut each other to buy it.

I grew up in western Iowa, and yes, the local audiophiles highly respected Conrad Johnsons. Most of my experience with CJ's were with the tube variety, but the one or two solid state versions I came across also sounded pretty good. Unfortunately I never owned one (tube nor SS). Every once in awhile I begin to think that maybe I'll step up to a pair of Premier 12's or something similar CJ has made.

A buddy of mine has that same CJ amp. It sounds great and would be a nice step up from the Carver (which sounds good too, the CJ is on another level however).

Depending on your pre and source you may not notice much difference between the two. Not to mention they both are over 20 years old and need refreshed. Now if both were refreshed and you had "A" grade pre and source I'm sure the CJ would rule the roost.

That could have been done as early as 1995.

Don't worry Jesse. I'm sure a worn out POS CJ will still sound better than a restored Carver

They were the closest thing Jesse heard to the sound of an actual meteor impact since he witnessed first hand the event that wiped out the dinosaurs....

You dont know what your talking about @nooshinjohn . @F1Nut rode the asteroid down to earth and so began his rein of terror.

The meteor didn't kill the dinosaurs, Jesse did, one by one as he drank their blood to extend his eternal life lol...

That one made me laugh hard enough that it drew a crowd to my office. And I mean I don't laugh easy.

Close only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades, and as I pointed out to the horror of my history teacher when he said this, thermonuclear war. I guess when you spend a decade hiding under a desk, that would not be funny.... my point is get off the pot and go get the damn amp already.
