THX Surround Speaker question

Quick question: I recently purchased a Polk RM6600 Theater system with a PSW350 subwoofer (this is all connected to an Onkyo DS-797). Couldn't be happier with the speakers or the receiver. However, I need extra speakers to get the full Dolby EX (or is it THX/EX, whatever) effect - that is, the rear speakers.

I'm wondering if I should just get a small, inexpensive speaker, such as a RM-1300 for the rear speaker; or should I get Polk FX300i speakers for left and right surround, and move 2 of the satellites from my RM6600 set to the rear? I'll gladly admit to be an stereo neophyte, and would appreciate any advice.

Thanks,

Mark

Welcome to the forum Mark-#1 your recever is 6.1 or 7.1 right? If it is IMO I would get the FX300s first and get them from a place where you could return them easily, like C.C., if you don't like the sound. Again IMO I would not use a center speaker but YOU are the one who has to like the sound and live with it. You have to let your ears tell you what would be best. Hope ya stick aroud.

But wouldn't a big FX speaker be overwhelming in a system of smaller RM6600 speakers? This is my concern.

I believe (don't hold me to it, of course) you can special order sets and pairs of RM speakers from CC, so you could pick yourself up an RM center channel speaker. I just think that an FX speaker would be too much for a small system.

    Am I wrong?

you may be right, but i think depending on reciever (how much you can adjust ech individual level) and room layout, the f/x 300i's could sound pretty nice paired with an rm series. i would definietly go with the f/x's if you ever think of upgrading the rest of your system as well, but if not, micah has a point, you could try either an rm center, or another pair or rm surrounds...

Thanks for the information. If I was to go with the smaller, RM-style speakers, would a center speaker or a satellite speaker be better for the rear channel? The receiver I have only has a single powered output for the rear channel (it does have two pre-outs, but I'm not quite ready to spring for the additional amp just yet). Thus, I only need one speaker back there (for now). Thanks again for your help and patience.

the choice is yours, either option is fine. if you plan on upgrading to 7.1 at any time i would recommend going with a satelite. you could also double up the wiring and run 2 satelites now from your one pre-out, not the ideal situation, but you could do this if you do plan on getting a seperate amp or a reciever to power 7.1 channels later. if no upgrade to 7.1 is in your future, either the center or the single satelite is fine, your preference as to what you prefer sound wise...
