Tube curious - Preamp or Integrated

I've only ever had my ears on solid state components since I was first exposed to "high end" audio back when I was a kid in the 90s (I'm only 33, be nice!) listening to my Dad's Onkyo integrated and Snell bookshelf speakers.
I'm looking to experience what tubes have to offer and want to purchase a tube preamp, which I will combine with a solid state amp (don't have yet, recommendations welcome), or just a tube integrated amp.

Yep, for the 703s.
Budget would be up to $1,500. Although I'm looking to not spend that much if possible, but all tube stuff seems so pricey
Budget? I assume this is to go with the 703s.

Also I forgot to mention, I don't need/want a built in phono stage, headphone jack, or DAC.
