You thought I was kidding in this thread. You thought I was way out in left field.
Pat your ****%&*!# father on the back for me - he just wrecked what is probably the finest 12" woofer in the world, to the tune of $600 replacement cost. WTG, DAD.
If it were me, I'd file that under "clear case of customer abuse" and ask him to PAY for the replacement driver. SVS (or any other company for that matter) isn't in the business of subsidizing chowderheads who can't figure out how to use the product safely and within its intended operating parameters. That's NOT what a warranty is for.
If you wreck it through stupidity, ignorance, or overzealousness; you should pay to fix it - period."What we do in life echoes in eternity"

Oh, I agree with you entirely.
He thinks it is flawed, design flaw. Something wrong with it.
I cant argue otherwise.
Just pitiful.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

Thats basically what he might have to do, but he said if he does he is going to just send it back.
I told him he needs a bigger sub, but alas...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Unbelievable...wait, nm I believe it. I hear some bottoming out in Sid's future....if blood means anything in that family anymore.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Hehe, you wish. You would love it if it did. But alas, its not. I dont play music near as loud as him and I have watched several low FR movies with no problems. All looks good to me. But, I am going to check it out when I get home as well.
I am running mine crossed at 70hz, ran a lil less than 12 oclock, ran by speaker wire connection.
Mark, You forget that I do actualy take care of my gear. How easily you sir forget. To bad, but only thing I have messed up that belongs to me was 14 years old. Yet remember what they wish to. So be it, I am still putting your request into effect, on here and the flame forum. So either way, I respect it, and you should to. Obviously you dont agree with me and who I am or my family. I have no problems with you, but hey. Its alright pal. Life goes on.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
I'm not your pal, but I wish you luck in your audio quest. At least you give a shite, about your gear, that I commend you on. Regarding the PC-Ultra. Just because it's an SVS and it has the TV-12 driver doesn't really give you the license (IMO) to abuse it.
Sure, it will play loud, clean, linear, and super deep. The xMax of the driver is very high (a bit more than 26 mm), and the sub will move a LOT of air. But the TV-12 driver can (and has) been bottomed by owner's just getting plain stupid and pushing it way past what is reasonable.
One guy over at AVS repeatedly bottomed his single Ultra (and eventually ruined it) on We Were Soldiers by running it 5-6 dB hot on calibration and playing his system at Reference Level. He's got dual Ultra's now and is happy as a clam, but that 's what it takes for some people who want/need clean, uncompressed, 120+ dB bass peaks in large rooms.
So if the room is large, make sure you properly calibrate the sub with Avia (or at a minimum internal AVR test tones), and crank up some bassy HT or music at loud (but not stupid) levels and just ENJOY the sub.
You will know when the sub is approaching it's clean limits when the suspension of the woofer starts limiting the excursion and it simply won't play any louder, even as you continue to increase the Master Volume.
This is a huge warning sign you are exceeding the xMax and fast approaching xMag where you will bottom the woofer and possibly damage the voice coil.
Just some friendly advice to keep you from fragging an $1,100 sub on day one. With that said, I think you will be VERY impressed with what even a single Ultra can accomplish in a large room. Just don't get stupid with it, that's all.
Probably took me 10 minutes to type this advice. Results like this make me wonder if it's even worth my time. His father probably didn't even read it. It's like I'm talking to a friggin' wall with some people.
Just tryin' to help keep you from fragging a $1200 sub, but nooooooo.......Dr. Spec's full of ****, he's overexaggerating, he just likes to see himself in print, blah blah, blah. You're next Sid - I give you 3 months before you smoke the ISD. That is all."What we do in life echoes in eternity"

Hmmm, Is it possible that it wasn't damaged by abuse? Maybe it was just luck of the draw. Sometimes even new stuff can fail.

Well heres the fact...
The thing didnt perform well out of the box. It didnt handle low frequency well even when turned down on movies, it was actually dissapointing at most times. It very well could be defective, we are going to pull it out in the next bit. Will post blurry pics.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

how do you toast a SVS subwoofer? errr nevermind. i DON"T EVEN want to know. it'll probably bring tears to my eyes. how dang loud can someone listen to a well built sub to toast it?
maybe i'm just not a basshead or something. but i've pushed my 20-39pci before.. but my ears bleed from the pressure before it would ever blow. the sound pressure alone in the room keeps me from turning it up any more.
that's a real shame.. he should be made to listen to nothing but Bose and RS gear for the next 10 yrs.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

He didnt toast it.
The thing works fine with the surround in place. The voice coil dosnt rub, the spider is good. The surround is dislocated.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

Oh really? See choice quotes below. Sure sounds like back peddling to me. Care to eat crow now or later? Your father ABUSED the subwoofer, he TORE the surround. It was working perfectly when it left the factory, trust me. CASE CLOSED.

Doc,
I dont post everything that goes on around here - believe that or not.
In Daredevil like in the bar scene, even at -11 off of Reference level the thing made a SHARP sound during that scene. And other scenes through out the movie.
I just expect a sub like this to handle it.
But really, when looking at the surround there just isnt alot of glue on there from what I can tell.
My Dad very well could have blown it out of the surround. I just havnt ever seen it happen. It just couldnt handle LOW FR in movies. Even with the subsonic filter on 25hz. It makes no sense to me.
Back-Peddling? Yeah, I guess so. It sucks to see it die like it did. But the surround can be glued back on, nothing else about it has been disturbed.
But as we were saying last night in the chatroom, he outta be the one testing speakers. If it can outlast him for 1 month - its perfect.
I know my Dad can blow speakers, I sit here and watch him do it all the time. It is nothing new, he blew so many Advent woofers back in his day that they mailed him and said his life time warranty is void.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Daredevil DTS has a shitload of infrasonics that most subs completely ignore. It's a VERY difficult DVD for sub tuned to 20 Hz.
I strongly recommend a PB2+ for your Dad, with the tune switch welded at the 25 hz position. That sub really IS almost indestructible in the 25 Hz tune with all ports open.
I would call SVS tech support instead of yanking the driver and doing a self analysis. It may very well have internal damage you can't see, especially if you bottomed it out."What we do in life echoes in eternity"

I have wrote Ron several emails, and sent him alot of pictures. He is sending out a replacement driver. If it still bottums out I am going to email him again.

But isnt it strange the surround came unglued?
I mean even it was played beyong its limits? I dont understand why it would come unglued before the voice coil blows?
