Veneer touch up, anyone?

Any woodworker types here who have successfully touched up the black ash veneer on the RTi/CSi cabinets? One of mine has a couple of small spots on the bottom where the surface of the veneer has peeled (don't even ask!). I know it doesn't normally show, but I'd like to restore it as well as I can without a complete refinish.

Small spots and veneer peeled don't normally go hand in hand. Can you post a photo?

Hmm . . . on closer inspection, the veneer is not peeled. Only the finish coat has lifted off, the result of removing some stick-on rubber feet  I think I can brush on a thin coat of matching stain/finish mixture, rub it out, and it'll be okay.

Funny, but I knew it was going to be from some kind of stick on feet. It's hard to tell from the pics, but are you sure that isn't glue residue? If it is residue, get some Goof-Off. If it is the clear coat that has lifted then get a can of clear satin spray lacquer. Lightly scuff sand the entire bottom with 220 serrated sandpaper, wipe clean. Tape off all other parts of the speakers with blue 7 day release masking tape and newspaper or whatever to cover everything as the spray will get on anything not covered. Spray on a few light mist coats and if everything is looking good at that point then spray on one last coat a little on the medium-heavy side. I don't think you need to add any color, but you can test this by wiping a little spit on the spot, it should look like the rest. If not let me know and we can take it from there. Be sure to let the spit dry well before spraying the lacquer.

BTW, have you ever used Pledge on the speakers?

Its not glue, my RT35i have suffered the same problem. It peels off the finish on the speaker and leaves it a dull grey.

I am tried alot of things, and nothing really works. Those effin rubber feet SUCK

Sid, if it is just the clear coat finish then the above proceedure should work just fine. The only problem I can see with getting a match is if Polk used a toner in the finish coats. That is, a color agent is added to the clear coat. There are toners available in spray cans, so all is not lost.

It isn't glue residue, cause it doesn't have a tacky feel. In fact, the coating that came off with the feet is the black ash color. That convinces me that there was toner in that final coat. And as Sid said, what's left is a dull gray color.

Thank God, I have never used any kind of polish on the speaker, so there shouldn't be a problem with the new finish sticking.
