Well since this is a weekend project, and not next weekend...just get the best you can from Radio Shack or an Electronics Supply house. I like the flux type, as it distributes evenly and easily.

A premium solder would be Cardas brand, but it is pricey, and you would have to order it.

thanks..should I check out Home depot or just the stuff from RS..
and how do I do it ?? I know how soldering works but do I just add a bit in the inside of the nana plug and shove the wire in then peel back the rubber/plastic cover ??

Yea sure, whatever is best for you. Basic solder w/ flux is the same anyplace you find it. Do you have a soldering gun or wand to begin with? The higher the wattage the better. I would recommend a 30 watt wand minimum, which they have at HD.

A 60/40 rosin core will work very well. Make sure you thoroughly clean the surfaces before soldering with Alcohol to remove dirt/oils. clean the solder joints again afterwards to remove the flux, it's corrosive and can degrade the joint over time.

You should be fine soldering banana plugs, it'll make good practice before you tackle pc boards.

Piece of cake! If you soldering gun has a variable temp setting, start low until the solder flows smoothly. Practice a bit if your unsure. Nice even joints is what you're after, "The Bigger the glob, The better the Job" is not what you're after.

Put the wire into the solder cup, heat from the opposite side that you apply the solder too. Make sure you add a small drop of solder to the soldering iron first to act as a heat bridge. Keep a moist/damp sponge on hand as well. You'll want to drag the tip across it frequently to keep it clean and reduce the amount of possible contaminents. Oxydized solder is not your friend.

I like the high purity silver solder from RS personally. If you get a gun thats to hot you can damage the board.

I solder every day at work fixing cell phones & pagers. For av I like to use solder with silver. rat shack has one which I use pn:64-013e bearing solder 62/36/2 the 2 is 2% silver. there are higher silver content solders also but the higher silver content the higher temp needed to flow. I started using WBT solder which I think its great, but expensive. I use either a 25 w or 35 w weller pencil type Irons for most of my work. I have much more expensive Irons I use only for cell phone repair which I can control the temp almost exactly. One tip tin your iron, wire, & connector (banana) before trying to solder into the banana. If the solder has a hard time flowing flux the contacts. I would flux the wire after tinning & flux the banana than solder the wire tino the connector heat the connector flow the solder than heat the wire. The flux will usually burn off & there will be some residue, use either deantured alc or I like acetone to clean all the flux off. Even if you dont use additional flux clean every solder joint with denatured alc or acetone!!!! I use additional flux on most solder joints it makes the solder flow faster & I can use less heat. I like the rat shack flux # 64-021. I have tried others but th rat shk to me is best. I also like to use KESTER solder. sold in a small tube with a hole on the top where you pull the solder out its also a 62/36/2 solder, if you dont need much solder that may be what you would want. Key use only enough solder to get good contact, clean all solder joints & do not over heat the wire or board. the banana can take much heat where the wire cant!
