The Timeout.......

Just wanted to post my thoughts about the Timeout thing. I'm glad to see that Spyderman is banned, but that too WAY too much/long to happen IMO...This isn't to slam anyone, but more to put my opinion out there.

I suggest instead of writing profanity on the Polk website you simply do
not participate in the conversation if you think the person is an idiot.
You may always send private communication expressing your feelings.

With all of the arguements that have been had over the past several
months with regard to politics, someone (be it you, Micah, or the
general consensus) said that we shouldn't do the whole politics thing on
the site. I promise I'm not making this up. Spyderman completely
bulldozed SEVERAL people's threads then started a bunch of his own, and
it was after a week of him going on and on and on and on about the same
BS that I responded in kind. You SHOULD add an 11th Commandment telling
people to leave the politics at home. Can you count how many Politics
threads have ended in a brawl and compare that to how many have been had
in a civil and respectful manner? I don't know specifically, but the
first number is high, and the second number is ZERO.
I get the swearing thing. I do not make a habit of just swearing for
the fun of it and watch it pretty closely, but I don't apologize for
being the one that has to be the voice of the majority telling him to
cut it out because everyone's getting irritated at him being explicitly
clear that his intent it to irritate people. I did put him on Ignore
before you banned me, and that's fine. If Ignore would completely erase
the fact that the person even wrote anything, that would be a much
better thing IMO because human nature is to look when something is
telling you that there's something there you can't see. Oh well.....
Just to clarify something in your email......did you say that there have
been a lot of people emailing you about my use of the F word directed to
Spyder or was that an in general statement about what members will email
you about? If it's specificially about me, I'm torn as to what I should
say. Most of me is inclined to say EFF them for not having the balls to
say something to me instead of tattling like little 3rd graders. I just
find it amazing that the older people get, the more their communication
skills go down the toilet. <<shrug>> what do ya do.....
The give me a break comment was frustration on my part. I am irritated
that I'm the one that is pointed out as being the bad guy when there are
a LOT of the members that, because of people like Spyder, are choosing
to quit coming or posting to/on the forums. He's not an asset. He has
nothing positive to offer as of late and I think that the reigns need to
be pulled in on people whose sole purpose is to arrive and create hell
just for the sake of attention (thus my ATTENTION **** comment towards
Spyder). I realize that you guys are all busy at Polk and can't police
the boards 24/7, but IMO there needs to be an alternative to someone
getting banned by someone who isn't on the boards full time (nothing
personal). I'm not trying to criticize, but I've received several
emails from people telling me that I got shafted on this ban
thing....however long it's supposed to be for.
Sorry this is long winded. Ban me, time out me, or
whatever..........but by banning only me, you're sending the wrong
message to people IMO. It says "We're ok with people coming in and
causing problems, but don't be the one that reacts to it negatively." I
realize I should leave the F word out, fine........but the message would
be and is the same.

Unfortunately I can not read every post on the forum. You may be
correct, and I can't tell who is being an obnoxious person and who is
just sticking up from being harassed. I try to stay out of the
conversations and not "police" every topic - that's not what our forums
are about. You should be allowed to talk about whatever you want. We
have to draw the line when it comes to foul language or discussions
about illegal activities. Period.
You asked about the emails? I get emails from members AND guests that
say they are offended by the rampant use of foul language. Every time
someone "bursts" I get a flood of emails pointing it out. And, NO these
aren't always the normal contributors of the forum, they are people that
lurk or happen to stumble on the forum. It makes us look very
unprofessional to allow it to remain on the forum.
Next time you spot a "troll" that is just provoking people, please
notify me via email and I'll investigate. I like to give everyone a fair
chance and someone is being obnoxious, let me be the bad guy and say
something to him. I'm keeping a close watch on this guy from now on so
don't fall into any traps by giving in to him.
I've lifted the ban, you've succeeded in being a martyr.
Help me
please to catch these people instead of policing the good members.

I agree completely that flameworthy topics like politics and religion ought to be avoided by Rule #11 as I think I pointed out ahead of you, but then I don't make the rules, I'm just subject to them like hopefully everyone else.
I also agree with Justin's point.
If rules aren't enforced then they're pointless.
One can of course appeal to the management about modifying the rules but they still have the last word.
PS I don't think there were any bannings ... only a couple of timeouts. -
I really don't mind a good discussion on any topic but when it turns sour I run for cover most often. It just seems as though many would rather throw low blows and get ugly instead of keeping their cool and trying to explain why they feal a certain way using facts.
