I have POLK
RTI70s Front
CSI30 Center
RTI38s Rear
PSW404 Sub
All for $727
I have auditioned the NAD T762 with the RTI38s and also a Denon I can't remember what model but it was higher end. Many people will not understand my perspective but please try to understand...
I was underwhelmed by the Denon. I thought the T762 was awesome for power and also that sounds were very pronounced e.g. instruments that you would not normally notice were very present. The downside, and this is probably due to the speakers, is that my overall impression of both receivers was that the sound was overall dull and muddy. So even though I liked the NAD a lot I am seriously thinking about a receiver that would deliver better highs and suppress the midrange/muddiness for my speakers. Enter the Yamaha VX-1400. In many of the consumer reviews of this receiver those that really liked the receiver raved about the imaging, brilliance, live sound, etc. I think that I like a "bright" sound. I play violin and am a huge fan of trance esp. melodic trance (ATB, Aura, DJ Trashy, Alice Dejay, Moby, the list goes on and on), rock (DMB, Muse, Linkin Park, Something Corporate, Maroon 5, Our Lady Peace etc.) and to me "bright" is accurate. Thin is something else and I do not like that. I also sort of liked the Infinity speakers for this "brightness" reason. For my next system I will probably go with the NAD but for the speakers that I have and based on what I have heard of the Denon and NAD with them and also what I have read of the Yamaha and my taste in sound I am thinking that maybe the RX-V1400 would be a better match. So any opinions one way or the other?
Also I am very interested in DVD-A and SACD. I am fairly convinced based on the technical specs and what I have read that the main differences of opinion about quality between these two is due mainly to the mastering of the discs. Therefore I am not set on having both. I am leaning toward either the Pioneer DV-563 ~$150 or an older high end player e.g. Toshiba SD-9200 ~$300 used (it does DVD-A only). Would I be better off spending between $150 - $300 on a newer player e.g. Pioneer or spending $150 - $300 on an older presumably higher quality player such as the toshiba(the toshiba was $1000 +). Video playback is not important only audio DVD-A, SACD, CD, and optionaly take away one of the hifi formats.
Thanks!

I can only talk regarding your DVD-A vs. SACD issue, I have no knowledge regarding the Yamaha reciever. But about your DVD-A question, there are a lot of compatability issues right with the Pioneer 563, a lot of discs are not playing on them and Pioneer is working on a solution. If you have to go for a universal player, look into a Denon or a Marantz, but if you want DVD-A only, an older model should work out for you quite nicely.
