Sirius antenna help

Hard to figure out where to post this question but I'll try here. I purchased a Sirius system for my small fishing boat and the antenna came with something called a "ground plane". Looks like a small adhesive circle to place under the antenna. I assume this is to make a ground between the ant and mounting surface? Unfortunately the directions say to attach it to a smooth metalic surface. My boat interior is made up of carpet covered marine plywood so that's not going to work. I'm wondering if I can hook a ground wire to the antenna mounting stud and accomplish the same thing? Has anybody had to deal with this?
