Audiogon has lost their minds...

Have you guys seen the listing fees there? Holy cheet Batman! They are outrageous if you want to list anything anymore.

I don't know John, doesn't seem bad to me. There's no transaction fees. The listing fee for selling between $1500 and $3499 is $50.00, which is 3.3% and 1.4% respectively. You'd pay a lot more at eBay.

Ebay runs 10 percent but offers a lot more functionality and gets more eyeballs on items for sellers. What's AGons fee for listing under 1500.00?

I thought it was a $4 list and 2% transaction. Is that not the case anymore?

Ebay sure does get more exposure....but half of them are d-bags....imho. Audiogon caters to a certain audio crowd.....and dealer demo's/closeouts. Your chances of a good transaction and receiving a product as described is 10 times better on a dedicated audio site.

If you go to third party sellers on ebay, like those Ebay stores you bring your stuff to and they list it.....the cost can be as high as 30%. Still, lots of free sites to list or buy audio gear.

    NO.

Now its a flat listing fee based on price range, which you pay whether or not the item sells. Then there is no transaction fee.

Last time I listed it was $10 to list an item selling for a couple hundred bucks, which as stated, is a LOT more expensive on eBay.

There are pros and cons to both sites, but I have never had a problem selling on ebay. Sure. there are folks scouring the site looking to jack you I'm sure, but I haven't encountered them yet.

Buying is almost completely risk-free on eBay, as their policies clearly protect the buyer. 45 days to file a complaint, and eBay will almost always side with the buyer. That can become a problem as a seller, but if you are a high-volume seller you just have to be willing to accept returns and realize that you will take some losses. But I am a very small volume seller, and like I said I have never had a problem.

Bottom line is that you will often make more when it's all said and done on eBay due to the increased exposure, even after the extra fees. I sell on both because they both had different clientele and different advantages, just depends on the item and how big a hurry I am in among other factors...

What happens at the 30 day mark if the item doesn't sell. They used to allow 1 roll over for an extended 30 or do they whack you with another fee?

If you sold electronics on eBay these used to be the rates:

    8% of the initial $50.00

plus 5% of the next $50.01 to $1,000.00

plus 2% of the remaining final sale price balance ($1,000.01 to final sale
    price)

So if you were to sell something for $3,499 on eBay, the fee would be:
    $4.00 + $47.50 + $49.98 for a total of $101.48 which is 2.9%

But now they have gone up and it isn't nearly as attractive.

No problem. Either complain about it and get nowhere or move elsewhere John.

I guess I was taken aback by the 500.00 bill I would have if I listed a few items I have to sell. That is a pretty sizable chunk of coin. I just remember back in the day it was quite a bit cheaper. Times, they are a changin'.

I hear you John, the used market seems to be soft these days, plenty of lowballers lurking. Makes selling a PITA.

Passwords!!! Sometimes you need passwords to get your password which then takes you to your password which you have to verify with your password. And if you forget there are always security questions you can't remember. Yikes!

Top dollar eh ? Then ebay is the place for you. I've seen some pretty mediocre stuff go for more than it's worth.....even more than retail in some cases.

Take those ebay fee's you would pay, subtract that and offer it on audio forums.

Why not advertise it on here for free in the classifieds, unless you already have?

I am willing to pay top dollar for nice stuff however I do see a lot of cheapskates out there. I prefer to buy used stuff from the original owners and will pay a premium to them rather than deal with a flipper who just buys stuff to resell at twice what they paid for it. As a seller you want to avoid the flippers too unless you are in a hurry to just dump the stuff for anything you can get.
