Anyone use different output levels for different sources?

He's talking about setting different speaker levels in his AVR for each source. For example, he might set one source to play back at +5dB and another to play back at -2dB. However, that is completely unnecessary because one can simply adjust the volume using the volume control and obtain the same result. Easy peasy lemon squeezy, maximum fidelity.
I don't understand the concept. But I know I have a better understanding than you in these matters. -
OKAY, so today is my kids 23rd birthday. I asked her if she wanted 23 beers or 23 shots. She said neither. Now this thread makes me think maybe I should have had 23 shots and the beers.
Seriously, every source unit will be different on it's output level. I can put a BluRay in a player and play it nice and loud at volume level of about -18db. Same player I can put in a DVD and for the same great room filling sound I might have to have the volume @ -12db.When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.

Exactly. Of course, that is just the base. Then it still will be adjusted up or down, depending on the setting.

No, it does not achieve the same result. Not in my system.
Okay, now it seems like you're just trolling us. Maximum fidelity?

Wait, you mean if I want to hear quieter sources, I should increase the volume? Why hasn't anyone mentioned this before??

The take away here is that setting the output levels for each source is achieving the same thing as adjusting the volume. When the output levels are increased the maximum volume "number" is decreased which allows for relatively equal output across sources. Turning off audysee only turns off the eq, the levels remain. None of this has anything to do with fidelity. Fidelity being the faithful reproduction of the original source.
With that said playing YouTube from your smart tv is a very poor source for sq as it is very lossy. Playing louder or turning off the eq, likely in your case, increases the top end slightly which can make the bad source sound a little better although the fidelity hasn't changed. Output level aside better sources such as a quality CD player or DAC with a lossless streaming device will have better fidelity and will sound better at lower levels.
Enjoy!Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. What I am tryin to say is, is that the course of your life, well its changing, and you don't even see it- Forest Bondurant -
Well now ain't this been a interesting thread!
Anyhow just for the sake of sharing my special state of stupidity.I think that he may be confusing what that option in the receiver does,If I understood it right it is intended to set a volume level and if wanted a set tone control for each source This allows a set volume and tone setting when switching between sources.IE-going from a dvd to tv may have a wide variance in levels. Setting the volume lower for a one source eliminates the need for due diligence to the volume level when switching.[especially useful when both sources are in operation] Same can be said for setting the tone control ie-one might like the settings flat while listing to CD but may like some boost when listing to radio[setting a tone control for each eliminates the need for adjustment]
However this option does not and will not effect the amps fidelity abilities and is only included as a convince option!...But thats just my common sense approach to its intent,if indeed that is what the op was attempting to relate on the subject
