Where is Harry Chapin when we need him?

Yeah, yeah, I know -- dead.

But, still, it feels like he saw this one coming.

thirty-eight thousand pounds -- of cheese.

I lived very near Scranton. When this came out he was an instant local hero!

Harry Chapin was a good lad who died way way too young.

How did I know this was to be a 30 kiloton of produce thread? Ah, memories of spinning that on Mom & Dad's "suitcase stereo" when I was a wee lad...

Edit: (I suppose 0.015 ktons? Didn't expect to have to bust out dimensional analysis this early. Need to finish my coffee first.)

0.015 kilotons is, of course, correct for the Cavendish fruits (actually, technically, berries, per the internet). Who needs coffee?! ;)

One will note that the dairy products in the news story amounted to ca. 0.019 kilotons.

In either case, per Einstein's equation: E = m*c^2, either payload, if converted to energy, would be sufficient to destroy Scranton and its environs :o

I saw Harry Chapin at a coffee break concert at the old Cleveland Agora.
    Goodness he was great.

Saw Harry in 1980 just a year before his death. After the concert he was giving the ladies kisses and autographing ticket stubs if you donated to his World Hunger cause. He was just a good man, period.

I like(d) him a lot. His untimely demise was indeed terribly unfortunate.

I liked him a lot too as he and I share the same first name. I hated my name as a kid, and he helped me feel better. There was another person in the world with Harry as a first name.

Didn't he die in a wreck while driving a Volkswagen Beetle on Long Island xway?

    Bob,

I was born and raised in Scranton. Lived there until 2000 when my wife and I moved to the State College area. I grew up on East Mountain... about a mile from the famous "hill that leads into Scranton, Pennsylvania" (Moosic Street). My grandfather used to tell us the story of the crash and how the driver of the truck was decapitated. I'll never know if he was telling it from his memory of the event, or the song!

Per the YouTube comments (always an excellent source of info):

"It's based on a true story. The problem is that it happened eight months before Cummins received its patent for the Jacobs Brake, or "Jake Brake" as it is known in the industry. On March 18, 1965, Eugene P. Seski, was on his way to deliver a load of bananas to Scranton, Pennsylvania. Seski was driving a 1950s Brockway diesel truck tractor with a 35 ft (11 m) semi-trailer. Conventional wisdom is that he rolled the truck in order to avoid killing pedestrians or hitting a gas station, causing even greater loss of life.

That ride would have been a real short-snapper.

Bless the internet; Here's the scoop on the Jake Brake from Jacobs themselves :)

    http://www.jacobsvehiclesystems.com/about-us/history/

That puts me to mind of the great "C.W. McCall" (Bill Fries) and Wolk Creek Pass.

The interesting hifi tie-in, of course ;) is that the C.W. McCall "band" music was provided by Chip Davis, who is better known to nerds like us thanks to American Gramophone & that "ensemble" known as Mannheim Steamroller. (EDIT - oops, fixed my egregious typo!)

Bob - you're about half-way between my current and former 'homes'! We used to drive through Muncy on our commute from PSU to Scranton when traffic on I-80 got bad.

On another note, looks like Eugene Sesky's widow passed away only a few years ago. And she was living in the same assisted living facility that my grandmother is currently in.
