My buddy came back from his tour in Okinawa in 1983 with one of these and could set it to turn the stereo on with an alarm mode. Might be able tofind one of theseon the used market. Might be tough to travel with if you needed a travel alarm.

A pretty well kept secret are the Yamaha compact systems.
It is a little over your budget of $275 but I do not think you are going to find anything nearly as good for anything close to this price.
However it may be a bit deep for your bedside table.
No fan of Bose wave radio/CD which notoriously have CD failures, are way overpriced, and are all boom and hiss. Sure they will fill a room with sounds but I just do not find them to sound musical. I totally get not wanting a iPod/iPhone/Android type set up... just another thing that can go wrong. Remember the Sienfield episode about the guy that missed the marathon? Alarm did not go off... Was it am/pm? Was it radio station not tuned in? Was it volume too low?
There is a newer version of this unit that includes a USB port on the front but it is more money.

Not sure that one has an alarm function. Comments say that the clock does not stay on when not in use. So it may be nice but does not play well as a clock... the Yamaha I mentioned has an alarm function... and though I mentioned it may be too big for a nightstand I now realize that it can sit elsewhere in the room and operated by the remote. And I misspoke about USB, the Yamaha has it as well as Bluetooth. Perhaps the older version without older 30-pin iPod dock with remote control support and older version Bluetooth can still be found for sale for less. -
Here's another great sounding mini system with CD.
This one with dual alarms.
Did not mention it before as it usually sells for about $350 but noticed one on ebay that has been relisted several times without getting any bids... first he asked $220, then $175, then $140, all ending without bids. And now the current auctions starting at $110 plus $40 shipping. It is a very full featured and excellent sounding Sangean DDR-63. Sangen was formerly known as Proton.

Whoops. I forgot to embed the spam link in my post. I better repost it with the link. No one will notice. Namaste.

I mean, it's good to see a dedicated, hands-on spammer, you know?
Apparently not terribly detail oriented but definitely results-oriented.
That remembering to embed the spam link looks to be a development area for him/her/them.
