WTH is up with shipping prices lately?? I'm looking at shipping prices to potentially ship some speakers I have for sale. For a 16"x16"x12" box at 20 lbs insured for $125, its coming in at nearly $55 for the CHEAPEST option! If I box two speakers in one box, its around $100 for ground shipping. I know I've shipped similar items in the not-so-distant past for about 1/3 these rates.

I noticed this last night while trying to figure out how to ship 2 speakers myself. Stupid high.

I did just ship a very small phono to WI for $7. It was 1 pound. Hurray!

At these pices, it's cheaper to disassemble and put the pieces in a dozen flat rate boxes!
  • Just shipped a 35.5 lb, 26x24x12 box, insured for $500, half way across NA for $45.65 (UPS) and I thought THAT was exorbitant. Guess not? :#

I think you get a better rate in some cases shipping to a business address versus a residence. Can you send your goods to the buyer's work address, Al?

I figure all the free 2-day shipping and reduced rate shipping from internet retailers has affected the pricing of shipping for private customers.

Part of the increase in shipping costs a few years ago was sold as being a fuel surcharge. When the price of fuel went down UPS and FedEx seemed to increase their costs to customers instead of reducing them.

The Post Office and Fed Ex just increased their shipping costs last month.

I usually ship parcels larger than the USPS flat-rate boxes via Fed Ex ground. You can save a little (10%) if you have an account and go through the internet to print your labels and everything.

I had a large box weighing 125 lbs. quoted and the cost was over $200 so it made sense for me to just drive the 180 miles each way in my cargo van and pick it up in person. It cost me less than $100 in gas and I had the peace of mind that it would arrive unscathed.

Sign up for a Fedex account. It can save you a little coin. I used to sell rare or old bicycles on eBay. Now depending on which coast it goes to or size and weight. One bicycle can be anywhere between $45.00 to $225.00. Peace. D

As others have said, open a FedEx account. It's cheaper, and convenient. I regularly shim amps in 20x20x12 @ 35lbs, and it runs me about $45.

  • I ship around 40-50 items per month and have always averaged my shipping costs so that I don't take a loss in shipping with the fees and packaging costs, but this last hike has really made it tough. Some of the quotes must be done by monkeys in a cage somewhere as they don't have any consistency at all. Usually Fedex has been cheaper 70% of the time for me as a member, but I've seen them jump to twice the USPS parcel rate the last couple months.

I've always been fortunate that shipping for me has been an advantage living in the middle of the states, but the cost to N.E., CA. or Pacific N. W. has gotten crazy!

Similar to cable companies giving promo deals to new customers while they keep jacking the rates for loyal customers.

It cost the guy who bought my 3 Ascend 340s & stands $104 for shipping. This was only from SE PA to St Louis MO area. And that included my corporate discount, would have been $150ish otherwise. Prices have nearly doubled the last couple of years.

I'll admit, the shipping has killed a couple deals I was interested in on used gear.

When you say $100/pallet... Is that regardless of weight?

Freight companies usually have a minimum charge under a certain weight. I know my companies is anything under 500lbs is the same price. Don't matter if it is 1lb or 500lbs on one pallet

A lot of the cost increases are due to the problem that weight is not the only thing considered. They have added costs based on dimensions. Even fairly light items that are large have increased significantly. Obsviously, a lot of stereo equipment is going to be much more expensive to ship.

Yes, and the other trip is to purchase the label through eBay or PayPal if you sell there.

I have definitely noticed an increase, but not THAT much. But the online account and the eBay/PayPal discounts really help, so maybe that's why...
