Home security tips?

I got this new house that I am away from more than not. I have a monitored alarm and some lights that I can control with my phone. I found this thing that simulates light from a TV that I am going to connect with a radio for noise. Does anyone have any other slick ideas to deter unwanted visitors while I am away? BTW I have no wifi so "Ring" and that stuff is out. I probably asked this before, so sorry if I did.

No wifi?!? Back in the flinstones age!
I've been wondering the same actually. I live in a rental house, and my garage has a remote entry pad on the outside and at least once a week the panel cover is lifted like someone is trying to get in. I removed the battery from the pad but scared whoever it is is going to step up and break in, I'm not worried about any of my stuff, just worried that my dog would get taken or would run away if the house was broken into2 Channel in my home attic/bar/man cave

Nice thing about not living in a large city and in a smaller mountain town in the boonies instead... no worries about any of that. Drug addicts, gang members, and the homeless are nowhere to be found up here. Not that all homeless people are thieves but you know what I mean.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

Get one of these. A friend of mine has one and if doesn't know you well you will not get in her yard or out of the car. As fearless as any dog I've ever seen. Not good with kids though, thinks they're chew toys.

When I started my own business I bought the house next door to mine and modified it to use as my office and workshop.
For security I had a professional company install magnetic switches in every door frame, dual mode motion detectors, and pressure sensors under the carpet.
Every door had a double sided deadbolt (Medico), even EVERY interior door. Even if someone could get in they could not go from room to room.
And I had an iron working company install custom sized iron bars on every window that could not be seen from the street. The two window that were on the front had 220v window ACs in them. But for those window I had the bars on the inside. So if thieves did yank out the ACs they still could not get inside.
Plus I was always armed while on my own property. 45acp.
Paranoid? YES! ABSOLUTELY!
But even paranoids have enemies.
It all worked. I was never robbed and I have recently closed down the business and retired. -

What kind of business?? I'm not sure jewelry stores, banks, or pharmacies have security like that! -
Some basic precautions are good. But remember, if someone wants to get into your house to steal then they will. It's just stuff, and stuff generally can be replaced. Get good insurance with replacement coverage and put yourself in a peace of mind about your "stuff". A security system to tell you if someone entered, perhaps some cameras, and security lights (perhaps random, timer-based lights) to simulate someone being home.
-
I might add, if you think you need that much security for peace of mind.....move, your in the wrong area then. I realize desperate people do desperate things, but personally I wouldn't want to live in an area of so many desperate people. Just sayin'....home wise anyway, many have business's in not so stellar parts of town which may warrant excessive security.HT SYSTEM-

@afterburnt ,Do you have cellular service at this new location? I'm pretty sure there are systems avail for use with cell service, including wireless cameras.

Most cable TV companies like Comcast, Charter, RCN, etc. now offer really-nice security systems as part of their cable bundles. A lot less expensive than most professional systems.
The previous owner of the house I'm in now was a security freak. There is an elaborate custom security system with motion detectors, every entrance (windows doors) monitored, and 36 infrared cameras placed strategically inside and outside the house. Way overkill.
He told me that he helped the police on a couple occasions over the past few years by providing them with video of the street outside when there was a car stolen and some vandalism.
The thing I like the best though is in the master bedroom.
A SecureLogic gun safe with fingerprint I.D. Just press the button and place your finger on the little window and the door drops open.

No wifi, I could and should get it but I am only there twice a month at best.
No dogs, I am not there enough.
No renters, unless they don't mind moving out every time that I go up there.
Small town so not so much of those urban problems.
I carry a 10mm.
I have still cameras but no video (no wifi).
I was looking for more cheap and innovative tricks like a big dog dish with "Killer" painted on it, ya know that sort of stuff. -
If I had my druthers, I would have heads on pikes and random limbs strewn about but I am trying to look normal to the neighbors.

In that case, just hang a picture of Rosie O'Donnell in your window. Any self respecting burglar won't make it half way up your driveway without having to turn around.
If your gone that much, a timed light system so every night different lights go on so as not to have the same pattern giving the illusion someone is home.
You can't do the corny stuff like a big dog bowl, no dog crap means no dog....burglars are at least that smart, most anyway. Have the outside well lit up at night too. Let a neighbor you know and trust watch the place when your out of town. Every neighborhood has those few neighbors who watch things on the street. You can install phony security cameras too, but imho those rarely work. A good thief knows...and darkness is their friend so keep the joint lit up at night. You can also let your local police dept. know when your gone for weeks at a time. A relative that lives close by is also good to come around and check things.
Too much visible security tells me you have something of value to protect and makes me want to see what it is. Do normal stuff, like lights but not so much so that you stand out.HT SYSTEM-

Motion lights are amongst the simplest, effective deterrents going aside from actually being home. Having them in not so obvious spots works as well. You expect them at main entrances/garages but do you expect them low in the surrounding trees with high limbs as well...
When all else fails, use claymores. "Point towards enemy".Where’s the KABOOM?!?! There’s supposed to be an Earth shattering KABOOM!!! -

Yes yes and triple yes
If you can like gatecrasher said cable companies have great stuff now ......

Yeah I forgot, I have several motion lights outside the house too.
I think the cable company's security systems are just as good as the more expensive types. They are really pushing them and you can get free installation and everything. When bundled with your cable package they are a bargain.
I didn't show what was inside the biometric fingerprint safe because I didn't think it would be allowed on the site but you can put whatever you want in it. Valuables, cash, weapons, etc.

I can get you some as well. I'll wrap it in moist paper towels and then plastic to make sure it doesn't turn white by the time it gets there.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.
