Dressed or Undressed?

Speaker grills off or on? My Thiels recommend on for sonic benefit. I prefer my 2.3tl's undressed. How about you?

No grilles on my real loudspeakers -- they're beautiful enough without makeup ;)

I'm just glad this thread didn't veer off towards discussion of whether one's loudspeakers dress left or dress right.

I concur (FWIW) re: the Akai components of that era. Pretty, too. Yamaha-esque (and I mean that as a compliment to both).

Keep my 3.1TL grilles on, but they live in the living room and have to be decent. Back in the listening room, however ... records get spun, drinks get drunk, and grilles come off

Dressed, my wife already thinks I'm a little nuts about my stereo. If I were listening undressed, she would have me checked into a facility.

Actually, I was listening to the last track on Chariots of Fire (MFSL Original Master Recording) with grills off (LSi15's) and was completely lost in the music. The imagine was incredibly dimensional.

  • For the most part I usually run grills off except for my Artimas EOS. The grill frames hold the felt around the drivers in place and there is an audible difference with the felt missing.
  • I run on most of the time for protection from the kids however I do prefer them off. So when no ones home I let it all free. ;)

I had my SRTs de-grilled last week while I was repairing some broken posts and I could hear a slight difference but they are all back on fully-repaired now.
