Chances are you probably need a working credit card with a high available balance to be on this forum. I'm surprised they don't check out cards at the door. Don't get any ideas.

That sux man, I'm no credit expert although my score is hovering at 801ish. The best I can say is try to build up your credit by opening a department store CC or something similar. DON'T fall behind on a small ticket item payment(s) and go from there! Hope that helps and welcome to Polk forum's... the rabbit hole that's not going to help with finances. I use very little or no credit. Pay all my bills on time. Use my debit card linked to checking account or cash. Credit score was 815 last time I checked. Good luck. My credit sucked too ,til I got married 17 years ago. Peace. D

Ken, you are correct! I worked my way through in the 1970's, had a couple small student loans, that I did pay back, in full. College costs have skyrocketed. Not saying a student can't pay their own way, but it will be difficult and probably not to a top-tier school having to pay boarding etc. So start your 529 plans when the kids are young. You'll be surprised how much will be available when their ready to matriculate.

Not to mention kids are limited as to the amount of student loans they can take out. My daughter, a Jr is limited to $5K a year. The rest is deemed "family responsibility". S

Strange first post on an audio forum.

But....lets see if we can help the dude out. Ok, if your credit is that bad, nobody is going to give you a regular credit card. What you need is a secured credit card. These cards warrant that you deposit money with them in turn for a line of credit. So say xyz credit card company , you deposit 300 bucks with them and they afford you 300 bucks of credit.

You charge minimalistic stuff on it, like a tank of gas here and there, but don't pay it off every month. You pay just enough to keep a balance, a low balance, like 10 bucks. After a few months, you apply for a department store credit card, do the same thing, charge little things and only leave a very low balance every month.

After about 6 months you'll start getting CC offers in the mail. Some are going to be high interest rates though. Take one, do the same thing again. Charge very little and leave a low balance.

This establishes a history of responsibility.....and DO NOT make any late payments. Mail out your CC bills 10 days ahead of the due date as a rule of thumb to make sure it gets there on time.

Of course the other thing is, what exactly do you have holding your credit score down ? Bankruptcy....car repossession, unpaid prior bills ?

coming to this forum to ask for credit help is not a great idea. We audio nuts like to spend big money on gear we also like spending others money more. Then when you upgrade we will buy the old gear from you for penny's on the dollar.

sending a kid to college now sucks for the parents. My oldest just finished UC Irvine and it cost us a ton. The nice feds have placed a lot of burden on the parents now. The cost is so high I don't see how someone can work their way through college anymore.

use credit for only NEEDS not wants. I want a pair of S60's (walnut), I will settle for S55 due to not enough cash. No way will I spend credit on them.
When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.

    No.

If you have lousy credit, you don't need a credit card. You will only abuse it and dig a deeper hole.

That is true, but won't help building your credit score if that's the goal. We don't know enough about why the OP's credit is poor. Could have an X-wife, or 2....maybe 3. :p

Do you know what kids are usually not limited with?

WHERE they go. A lot of people scoff at 2 year, community college as a starting point despite the fact that usually ALL of the credits transfer directly to four year schools and you graduate with the same exact degree for a fraction of the cost.

Oh, and it usually can be covered by that $5k a year loan.

OR, like my wife and I did, paid in cash.

That's how I started, my wife and my youngest brother is doing it now. Saved us combined over $100,000 in tuition that we did not have to spend.

My wife and I are in our early 30's and student loans are paid and done. Mortgage is soon to follow. We have been careful with our money from day one.

CAN college cost a lot, yes.

But, it does not HAVE to.

As long as you're careful enough to use it toward your advantage.

I think a lot of people start off with that mentality and it can spiral out of control, quickly.

Most of my major purchases are made on 6-18 months no interest special financing. Why not use someone else's money for free? Of course this only works if you pay it off by the end of the promo term. I'm sure there are more people who don't pay it off in time and the finance company makes money, otherwise I'm sure they wouldn't continue to offer it.

One other thing I have been doing, is bank hopping. I have been moving a checking and savings around about every year to 18 months to take advantage of special cash offers. I just moved to a new bank and within 90 days they will give me $500 cash as a bonus for opening accounts and keeping a certain savings balance. After 90 days I'm free to move on. I pay everything electronically so other than setting up my direct deposit and bill pay, it's pretty painless, no fee's either.
