I read that it is an advantageous configuration. If so why and why do yooz think Polk changed them from the 40's?

Many ways to skin a cat. d'appolito also known as MTM (Mid-tweeter-Mid)
TMM design (Tweeter-Mid -Mid). Then there is different orders. The shitte will make your head spin. IMHO no wrong way except the way it's implemented.

Or concentric speakers, like Tannoy.
-
There's a pair of Tannoys here too, but they're just visiting.

In the Tannoy coaxes, the woofer cone actually forms part of the horn flare for the coaxially mounted treble driver. You can see the treble driver behind the dust cap (which is carefully designed to pass HF, like a good grille cloth) in the flash photo above.
In Great Britian, to this day, loudspeakers (especially "public address" speakers) are generically known as "tannoys" (much as tissue is called "kleenex" or dry copying is called "xeroxing").
Yeah, sorry, I'm not helping.

This guy.
and his configuration (the aforementioned M-T-M)

The idea is, in essence, to emulate a point source (heh, like a time-aligned coaxial driver!) for the MR and treble (LF doesn't matter so much, I suppose, as it is more or less nondirectional).

I am really enjoying my single driver Bose speakers with my dumpster system. They really are decent sounding for platic speakers, besides it's the only thing that I have in the new house so far. I will be bringing a spare pair of Monitor II 60's to the new place for mains in another make Do system. I wonder how they sound, I've only used them for surronds. -

platic is so under rated! -
platic is an adjective, of course, not a noun -- platic speakers are made of plat. Sometimes, though, they're just plat plated (that's the cheap ones, though).
In seriousness -- for all the cr@p they take on the hifi forums, Bose's loudspeakers generally get the midrange right.
A few years back, a very lowly pair of 201s passed through (y'all who know me can guess their provenance!). They acquitted themselves surprisingly well in terms of midrange accuracy (no mean feat, I'd opine).

That was with vacuum tube amplification, of course
They were found with -- something else.

I never knew that they made receivers. These 141's were the only speakers that I had for like 15 years and I never managed to blow them up. I wish that I could say that about the very first pair of Polks that I got. Not Polks fault though, I didn't have the good sense not to try to inundate a bbq with sound through an open window.
-
They (Bose) made a very serious receiver, the Bose Spatial Receiver, in the 1970s with built in EQ for the 901.
The little receiver that passed through here was/is some fairly generic Japanese OEM model sold with the Bose name and model number. Not in the same league as the "real" Bose electronics.
They also made at least one very serious power amplifier - the 1801.
(all of these images were borrowed from teh webs; not mine)

My brother had a Bose Receiver and ESS speakers and they played very well together and like the combo. his had the built in 901 EQ.2 ch- Polk CRS+ * Vincent SA-31MK Preamp * Vincent Sp-331 Amp * Marantz SA8005 SACD * Project Xperience Classic TT * Sumiko Blue Point #2 MC cartridge

It would be awfully interesting to compare them head-to-head.
Are the drivers identical? -
That receiver is beautiful, I think I am gonna put woodgrain contact paper on all of my stuff
-
That Bose receiver had actual wood veneer as best I can remember. They weren't cheap, in any sense of the word.

Price of the Bose spatial control receiver in 1981 was $925 per page 62 of the above equipment directory of the great, much-missed Audio magazine.
For comparison, the MSRP of the Sansui 8900ZDB receiver in the same issue was $900. The Sansui, of course, would have been substantially discounted by any retailer of the day. The Bose? Not so much
-
$900 in 1981 was a good used car! Back then Bose did make some decent equipment not the junk they put out the last 20 years.
As for the Polk 40 or 45 I would get whichever one is cheaper. When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.
