Using a subwoofer on an older amplifier without lfe or sub out

I have a pair of Polk bookshelf speakers and want to use a subwoofer with it. My question is would it be better to hookup the subwoofer to the "B" output speakers and keep the bookshelfs on the "A" output? That way the full freq response would be still coming from the bookshelfs while still getting the lows from the sub when using the "A"+"B" switch.

You normally would not want the bookies hitting the same frequency as the sub. You want the sub to continue where the bookies stop producing sound or, run output a to the sub and hook the speakers up to the sub to use the subs crossover.

  • What about the subs that just have speaker in and no output ? The bookshelf speakers themselves sound good with full freq response. Why would you want to cut them off if you just want to add a little more bass?

  • What amp or integrated are you using here? What sub are you using? If the sub has it's own amp, then the speaker cable hook up is only providing signal for the internal amp, and not really robbing any power from the amp. I have a small Raven tube amp I run like this. It has two sets of binding posts, and I use the 8 ohm output for the main speakers, and the 4 ohm for the sub.

  • I am using Polk TSi200 and a polk psw505 sub. The amp is a Kenwood KA405. It has an A+B switch.
  • Could not find a manual for the Kenwood, but I think, from looking at a photo of the Kenwood KA-405, you can select A and B on the speaker selector knob. Run a pair of speaker cables from the Kenwood B speaker binding posts to the PSW505 speaker in binding posts. I think that would be your best bet. The sub is using the signal from the speaker cable, but it's not using a bunch of power to drive the sub driver. It has it's own amp to do the work.
