Room design ………….. Crazy or genius?

If all goes well, I should be closing on the new house in about three weeks. That will give me a walkout basement that is 8" X 27’ X 44’. See the pictures that show stair placement etc. This is my space and I have decided to use it for a game room, half bath and a dedicated listening room. Listening room gets first consideration and I am looking to use 8H, 13W and 21L dimensions. These dimensions may change as needed. I am considering using tapered walls from back to front moving in 18” near the speaker wall on each side. Also want to taper the ceiling 18” from back to front. The end of the tapered walls and ceiling will be open at the speaker end. The thought process is to use sound absorbing material in the gap produced by the tapered walls and ceiling to catch and absorb the first reflections from the speakers. The room is relatively small and I want it to remain somewhat “live”. Back wall will include bass traps as well as multiple shelf units. Side walls will also have album and CD shelving. This build will not happen for some time, and I am still researching. I am looking for as much input as possible before construction. All input is appreciated, so let it fly.

I have a similar design for a future audio room. IMHO "not crazy"

I have been looking for the dispersion pattern off of the baffle of the SRS. That should let me figure out exactly where the taper should stop to collect the first reflection and absorb it. That's the idea anyway.Schiit Freya+, Krell KAV-250a, R-Pi network streamer, 8Tb NAS, Thorens TD-145 MKIII with Ortofon 2M red, Polk: Monitor-10B, SDA-1A, SDA-SRS

Best part with the angled was is cutting room slap
Good luck, looks like a fun project that will likely be fruitful

I like your idea with the angled walls! What if you build them but leave them free to be moved i.e. Adjustable angle before securing. Might help with that reflection you spoke ofYamaha RXA1030, Yamaha CD-S2100, Yamaha AS-2200, Bluesound node 2i

I've seen photos of that build. It is ridiculously nice.Schiit Freya+, Krell KAV-250a, R-Pi network streamer, 8Tb NAS, Thorens TD-145 MKIII with Ortofon 2M red, Polk: Monitor-10B, SDA-1A, SDA-SRS -
crashb4 - great idea! I built out a Rives room 5 years ago and it was the best investment in the hobby I have ever made. One thing you might consider is getting rid of the support poles, called lolly columns. I did not want to take that step but my wife insisted and glad she did. You will have to get a structural engineer to come in to see if you can replace with a beam. Believe it or not it was not that expensive.Basis 2200 Signature, Vector 4, Transfiguration Proteus, Allnic H3000, Meridian 200/563, CJ ET5, McIntosh 501's, Thiel CS6, 3.6, Polk SDA SRS 2.3tl, MIT EVO, KS/Wywires PC's

A noble idea, but will you always use SDA's in that room? Always, forever? What about selling and having an odd shaped room. I just think it's risky to design a room specifically around one thing. What happens when you get different speakers and what was an advantage becomes a disadvantage?
Just playing a bit of the devils advocate, asking the tough questions.
Carry on with a very cool project

"Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Measurements can provide a measure of insight, but are no substitute for human judgment. Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. Canceling first reflections is never a bad thing no matter what speakers are used. Dispersion angles should be relatively close from speaker to speaker and adjustments can be made with little effort once the main structure is in place. I'm not too worried about an odd shaped room. It's certainly better than the bare basement seen in the photos. I certainly do appreciate the input.Schiit Freya+, Krell KAV-250a, R-Pi network streamer, 8Tb NAS, Thorens TD-145 MKIII with Ortofon 2M red, Polk: Monitor-10B, SDA-1A, SDA-SRS -

Good point. I have been struggling with the columns. It doesn't hurt to have someone look. As stated, this project is down the road some, so I have time to consider all input. That's a nice space to work with. The furnace tucked in the corner is a nice thing to not have to work around. If you're using the bottom pic, I see that's where your main sewer drain line is, you'll need to have the cleanout accessible. I've never seen the 4" main running along the ceiling like that though.
Looking down the road, when you're thinking of adding a bathroom, check out Saniflo when you do. They make several products that will save you the hassle (and $$$) of breaking up the floor. I added a 3/4 bath when I finished my basement years ago, and used their SaniPlus macerating toilet; only thing I had to do was secure the bowl with 1/8" anchors into the concrete. It also takes care of a sink and a stall shower, no problems for 8+ years. So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

That's the plan. A tank behind the wall, up flow toilet and a sink. No concrete demo or trenching. The fixtures are a bit pricey, but when you consider the demo savings, it's a deal.Schiit Freya+, Krell KAV-250a, R-Pi network streamer, 8Tb NAS, Thorens TD-145 MKIII with Ortofon 2M red, Polk: Monitor-10B, SDA-1A, SDA-SRS
