Anyone know how to get a free Carfax report?

Looking at a used Tundra from a private party . Used to be able to get one from other members of car enthusiast websites. Thanks. D

Didn't know there was free, except when a courtesy from dealers.

  • Take the vin # to a Toyota dealer to get all service history done at dealers. Sometimes Carfax doesn't pick up all dealer service history. They should be able to give you a copy of it.

They likely can't do that due to privacy law issues. In CA the only thing that can be revealed is recall history

Any other resources for this info?
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

If you sign up for a mycarfax account you can check the service history with a vin or license plate. It only shows service history, maintenance and vehicle tilte/registration stuff. Not as detailed as an actual car fax but it is a start. Gives you a general idea if the vehicle was maintained.

I don't know if privacy laws vary from state to state. Here in Illinois it hasn't been a problem whenever I've done a vin # check at a dealer. Each time I've run a vin. it has always disclosed more info. on the car than the Carfax discloses. I'm not saying Carfax is bad though.
