Original peerless should drop in - no mods?

While the peerless will fit I believe the crossover is different from those that use the peerless.

If it needs a different crossover -
will a wiring newbie be in over his head?
    I wanna learn -
don't see any other way than to just dive in.

I am pretty sure the crossover is different to use the peerless. Someone here should have the cap and resistor values for the M4 with peerless tweeters. The hard part is if polk changed the inductor value too. The inductor is the wrap of wire around the speaker connector housing or sometimes just a spool. Unfortunately the inductor values are not printed anywhere.

The other thing to check is what model MW was used. I think the MW6500 were still used with the SL1000 tweeters, but I am not positive.

Probably the best bet would be to find a crossover for an original Monitor 4 with the peerless. https://us.v-cdn.net/5021930/uploads/attachments/1/7/0/6/5/5/80821.jpg
Or maybe someone has one for the 5Jr with the peerless, although they are very rare, and tbh, I am not sure if they even existed. I would assume the crossovers would be the same between the 4 and the 5jr with a peerless, but I am not positive. The only difference between the two is the 5Jr used a larger cabinet and the port hole is located lower.

The other option would be the crossover for a Monitor 5A with the peerless tweeter. Those show up on Ebay often. The M5A used the MW6500. The inductor value is still a guess and I am not sure if they made the crossover different because the 5A had larger cabinet with a passive radiator vs a port.

Pictures of your current crossover and confirmation of what MW you have will help.

The main challenge in changing the crossover is soldering in new capacitors and resistors.

    Excellent info pkquat. Thanks.

I had noticed a sibilant harshness or "edge" to the SL1000 highs - vocals, ride cymbals etc.

I am running them with a Marantz 2216B. It has a "Hi Filter" button. If I push it and kick up the treble a notch everything smoothes out nicely.

It's gonna take a while for my digitally damaged ears to adjust to all this silky warmth.
