in-wall speakers going into gas fireplace chimney cavity
I will have my front and center speakers in the cavity for my gas fireplace. There's about 12" or more of space around the 6" chimney pipe on all sides. Inside that pipe is the actual 4" chimney exhaust so it doesn't get terribly hot in this cavity like you'd think. I'm installing the LS series speakers (255c-LS and 265-LS) in this wall. There are studs obviously so I could just 1) build a box out of 2x4s between the studs and put a piece of 1/2" plywood on the back and fill the space loosely with polyfil this box would be 4" deep, 2) make this "speaker box" larger by making the box deeper (maybe 6" deep on top of the 4" studs for a total of a 10" deep box) and filling with polyfil, or 3) keep the speakers as is with no box at all.
What would you do?

I wouldn't consider putting speakers in a cavity to begin with. A pic of what your trying to do would help.HT SYSTEM-

If your fireplace is installed to code I would not worry about heat. My concern would be vibration transmitting through the chimney and out of the fireplace.

Anything is possible. I remember paulsteve posted a pic of his large SDA 1 speakers wall mounted as shown below:

Yeah it is a bit nuts, I would not be in that doorway in an earthquake .When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.
