I upgraded my Monitor 7's tonight

I finally got some time to upgrade my monitor 7's tonight. I recapped the cross over with sonic caps and mills resistors, covered the 6" speaker and passive radiator baskets with Dynamite, glued the magnets, and put them back together. My replacement RDO-194 tweeters will be here next week. All I can say is WOW! They sound amazing. It was well worth the investment of time and money already, and the capacitors only have 1 hour on them. The bass is amazing, and soundstage is very deep and precise. My Yamaha M-85 in class a mode is barely hitting 1 watt on the meters. I can't wait to get more listening in tomorrow. Thank you to every one that helped me with advise on upgrades, pictures, and encouragement.

One question, there was one small disk style cap that was on my cross over, but not on the schematic. Here's a picture of it. Should I leave it alone?

That is a polyswitch (thermal overload device), which should be removed because they are nothing but trouble. Replaced it with a .5 ohm Mills 12 watt resistor.

Ha! Obviously it was late when I posted and the auto correct got me.

F1nut, I purchased the .5 ohm resistors planning to replace the poly switch, but that isn't what I was expecting it to look like. I'll swap it out when I install the new tweeters next week.

How long will it take for the Sonic caps to break in?

What did you expect it to look like?

    200 hours to fully cook.

As a follow up, I wanted to post my impressions with the cross over re-cap, and adding the RDO-194. I am stunned at the sound these Monitors are putting out. They are far and away the best speakers I have ever owned. The addition of the RDO-194 tweeters were the biggest improvement. Comparing these to the sl-2000 is like comparing grandmas cookie to chips-a-hoy. The RDO-lets me hear the cymbals, from the crash to the decay, and everything in between. The SL-2000 makes some noise that resembles cymbals, but thats about it. The RDO-194 is just delicious! Thanks for all the guidance on this upgrade trail. If your on th fence about the RDO-194's, just get them!

A good part of what you are hearing is also the x-over refresh. Combined with the RD0's it really is an entirely new speaker.

    Enjoy

  • Nice, I'm at the same consensus. I recapped mine first, big improvement. Did the TL mod and added the rdo-198 tweeters and I can't stop listening to them. I got mine for 6o bucks, love them. Glad you like the improvements also.
