LSiM 703 in Stereo Mode

I have a Onkyo TX-SR608 receiver that I am planning to use with 703s for Stereo Music. TX-SR608 is rated at 100 watts in Stereo mode. Is this enough power to drive 703s or do I need a Stereo amplifier?

Thanks in advance.

It will suffice, but not the best sounding thing for stereo music.

What would you recommend without investing too much money on it. This setup is for a second room, music only. Thanks.

I think a marantz integrated would work nicely, like the PM6005. Has a built in DAC. $500 new on music direct, or you can save 50 bucks with a refurb from accessories4less.com.

What is your source going to be?

I really like my rotel pre, but I am planning to upgrade my amp. If you don't need HDMI, you can get a rotel 1066 or 1068 for under $200. Then get a nice little two channel amp and that would be a HUGE improvement over the Onkyo for music...

To start with, using an entry level HT receiver for music isn't going to show you the best those 703's have to offer. You can use it for that purpose of course, but you won't find too many who'd recommend that approach.

Whats your idea of "not too much money" ?

If you wanted to go cheap, a vintage receiver like a Sansui or Marantz would be way more musical than your present receiver...and power them better too. Maybe a tube integrated from the likes of Yaqin, Dared, and others would offer you much more musicality than that 608.

Without a budget though I'm just shooting in the dark here with recommendations. Plus we'd need to know what your source for music is, cabling, preferences in sound like more forward or laid back, dynamic with a non fatiguing top end, or you may prefer ice picks in your ears, we don't know.

  • How about using Behringer EP4000 using two preouts provided by TX-SR608?

it won't work. That receiver doesn't have preouts.

I would personally just use the receiver before adding that amp. If you sell the receiver, you could get an older used 2 channel integrated from Marantz or yamaha or nad that would sound much better.

  • With no other information I'll go against the grain and say try the oiker with the 703's and use Audyssey. It will cover up the 703's warts for stereo music. You could put the money towards a musical sub or 2.

Strictly 2 channel? Parasound 1000a paired with a Parasound PLD 1100 pre. Should be between 300-500 dollars. Get some good interconnects and speaker cable. Don't have to go crazy there, but Audioquest has quality wire for not a ton of cash.
