One of my first memories was attending the circus back in the day at the St. Paul Civic Center... they are folding the tents for the last time in May. I was looking forward to their return to SoCal so I could share it with my son(due February 27th B) ), but it won't be happening.

From my hometown of Baraboo, Wisconsin.

A sad day indeed. Besides their traveling stuff, there is a permanent site in Baraboo that was still going strong even into the 90's as I was growing up. A huge big-top, tons of visitors and the whole shebang.

It has slowly died off, and has whithered to almost nothing.

That and animal abuse. Never could understand taking wild animals and making them do stupid pet tricks. SeaWorld's fate will no likely be the same.

Even though I enjoy the local Zoo, you have to wonder about keeping animals of that size in confined spaces. No wonder these animals eventually turn on their caregivers. Every living thing wants freedom I guess.

Another 3-ring circus used to come to Penn State every year. They would bring everything in by train (very nostalgic) and then walk the elephants and equipment about 1-2 miles from the train to the Bryce Jordan Center on campus.

The last time they came, our kids were 3 and 5 and we took them over to the University to watch the elephants marching to the venue. I made a joke that I should have brought some peanuts for the elephants. About 2-3 weeks later, I met my wife and kids at Five Guys for lunch. On the way out, Kara (3 at the time) reaches up into the box of peanuts and grabs a handful (about 2 or 3 in her tiny hand) and stuffs them in her coat pocket. I asked why she was putting peanuts in her pocket. Her very direct answer to me was, "in case I see any elephants, Dad!". I'll never forget how much I and my wife laughed. And, Kara just looked at us like we were crazy.

    The circus will be missed!

The three rings were the most amazing thing. However, its the live music that I loved! The music really enhanced the show.

Nevertheless, my kids are 15 & 12 now. The last time I took them when they were younger I could not believe the lack of enthusiasm by the crowd....well...I guess I understand. I used to be on the edge of my seat as a child back in the 70's at the State Fair Coliseum in Detroit. Also, the cost of tickets, concessions, and souvenirs was up there.

Sad to see so much tradition go away.

Saw them last spring for the first time with my 3yo.
It was a fun show but the attendance was dismal.

They say they are hanging it up, everyone will flock to see the final shows, and RB will make a killing. Then after the dust has settled, say 1 year from now, they will be reborn. This is not the last we will see of RB&BBC.

They are gone for good, a spokesman for BBC stated today that the ticket prices that had to charge to cover expenses were out of reach for most middle class Americans. I suppose the affluent don't attend circuses.

Is that you Tony??? Or are you drinking Bud's koolaide again.

No koolaide bro, just some common sense. I understand taking in animals that can no longer thrive on their own in the wild, but senseless capture and confinement for the amusement of we humans is kinda dumb in my book.

I know I know....they are animals, we eat them, raise them to be slaughtered, make clothes out of them , use their oils for lamps and cosmetics. You have to admit though, we humans when we get an idea in our heads we always take it to the extreme.

I'm not an environmental wacko, tree hugger save the planet type, but I do believe we have to at some point inject some common sense into everything we do. For instance, just being a good steward of the planet like not littering, or allowing companies to dump waste in our waterways. That's common sense stuff, not regulating cow farts, plastic bags, etc. If your a hunter, one of the number one rules is to only hunt what you need, not just senseless slaughter for sport like big game hunters do in Africa. I see no common sense in taking a selfie next to an Elephant you just shot laying on the ground. Animals are here for us to sustain ourselves, not amuse us or slaughter for no reason. You upset the balance of nature when you start interfering too much.

Don't you think we are already there....

As for the circus, it's not ALL animals. There is so much more.
Stunts, acrobatics, clowns, performances, singing, comedy, CLOWNS, etc.

I think one of the biggest problems is, once you've been to the circus, you've basically been to every other circus in existence. I bet not much has changed in the last 50 years.

If you weren't good at life, there was always the circus...Now what?

John and Mable Ringling were huge patrons of the arts and benefactors for Sarasota/Bradenton, FL. Their home - Ca' d'Zan, gifted to the people of Florida from John's estate, the art museum founded from their collection, and many other ventures they involved themselves in created what is known today as the "Culture Coast" of the state.
