"in-wall" sub placement?

Hey guys, I bought the RM7200 setup for a new house I am building. Living room is 26 x 24. My "lovely" wife doesn't want the subwoofer against any wall or under any table. Picky, I know. I wanted some expert opinion on the idea of building a box inside my living room back wall for the sub, with an air-return type of wall covering to vent the base into the room. I think the back wall is my only positioning choice because it can slide under a stairwell leading to the second floor. Anybody ever done this or have heard the results from this setup?

Secondly, the manual recomends NOT using the "sub out" on my receiver and instead run speaker wire from the sub to the front speakers. With the sub in the back of the room and the receiver in the front, that would be a bunch of wire. Is there really any problem letting the receiver be the brain of the system instead of the sub? Can you turn off the filter in the sub if you are using the receiver's filter instead?

Two big questions! Hope you can help me down here in Tennessee. Go Grizzlies!

    Welcome to the Club Drew,

Yes you can use a RCA type cable and let the receiver do the bass management. I believe most people here use this method.

I am not clear on where you are proposing to put the sub, maybe you should look at building an "infinite baffle sub". If interested do a search in google.

    Here is an extreme example

Thanks for the reply gatemplin. I looked up the baffle sub link and I think you know exactly what I'm suggesting. It is the same pricipal as the infinite baffle sub in that the sub is set into the wall, but I'm just suggesting to put the regular box subwoofer that came with my RM7200's into that box(closet) and let it vent into the room. The closet would be designed just big enough to set the subwoofer inside. Now what do you think?

I think this could work but I am still not sure how you are routing the air from the port back into the room. Near the tuning frequency of the sub most of the output is coming from the port. Also, if you are anything like the rest of us here, you will be upgrading your sub at some point. FWIW I am on my fifth sub in two years and I never expected to upgrade.
