Musical Fidelity M1dac

Hey there polkies,

Anyone have any experience with the MF m1 DAC? My dad has one that is no longer being used as he bought a Krell streamer/DAC, and he offered to sell it to me at the "son price". While I don't know how much that is, my experience says it won't be much, maybe 200 or so. I've been eyeing a used benchmark Dac1 or PS DL III, is the m1dac a viable piece for a fairly low price? Professional reviews have been up and down so unsure of what to think.

Ultimately if I buy it, I want to use it, and not resell. Rest of system is listed in my sig, the DAC will mostly be used with my Blue sound Node2 streamer.

I've not personally owned one, but have heard it on more than one occasion. Might be good for the Node, give it a touch more weight and warmth to the sound. My impressions of it though seem to tell me it's not as detailed as others, has a touch more laid back sound more in tune with the MF house sound.

Don't take that as a negative either, those characteristics can work well in the right system. Since it's your pops, ask him to let you use it for a week to see if you like it. Whats he gonna say...no ?

Thanks Tony, I really appreciate it. I am a fan of laided back sound so that is good. I'll see if he will let let me demo it before I pay for it

I have one and it has worked very well for me. It is a very nice piece.

My dad will sell it to me for a hundred bucks. I'm pretty sure it will be more than worth that. I'll give it a shot and see, I've been eyeing a used PS DLIII but this should be at least close

Well it's mine now. Now to experiment with different ways to wire everything up. My integrated has balanced inputs and I have some decent xlr's so I'll give that a shot. All indications say to MF and my integrated are true dual differential designs so we will see. Any recommendations coax vs optical? Looking at the wireworld starlight coax at the moment. I have wireworld oasis 7 RCA's if the xlrs don't work well.

Digital coax over toslink would be my preference. The MF dac will certainly be an improvement over the Node's internal dac.....and for the price, you better take it or we'll slap you silly.

I wouldn't put too much stock in anything labeled a giant killer. More times than not, it will leave you disappointed.

Well my dad just ended up giving it to me, so in my system it goes. Have to wait for my new rack and some cables and will see how it goes.
