Is that a good group for beginner?

Hi, guys:
I am a totally beginner. Recently I am thinking about to finish my basement. And I want to build up a room for the home theater. It is approximately 14'Lx13'Wx7'H.
Yesterday I went to Bestbuy and found there are some speaker on sale, and the assistant gave me a choice.
That is a 7.1 group:
2 Polk Audio RTiA5
4 Polk Audio RTiA1
1 Polk Audio CSiA6
1 Polk Audio PSW10
and the Receiver would be Sony STRDN1060 or the Pioneer VSX-1131-K
Is that a good group? or any part could be better for the sound?
I will use the home theater more for watching movie.
Thanks everybody!

Drop the a1, get two fx speakers and go 5.1. Drop the psw10 and get the psw505. Your room is too small for 7.1 in my opinion.

I don't start to finish the basement so I still have chance to have a bigger room. So in your opinion how big the room is can use the 7.1. I can't make the room higher than7'
  • I see. And what are the FX speaker.. I don't know much about the speakers

I don't have a number in mind but my old room was 12x14x8 and it was barely big enough for a 5.0.

Good call. Mines 18x20 and my 7.2 feels stuffed in there, lsifx mounted on the rear walls several feet above your head.

My room is 14' x 18' and I love my 7-2 setup. I do have a bow window to set my rears in mind you. I would suggest a ID sub like SVS, HSU or the like, no offense to the Polk subs
    Samsung pn64f8500
    Sonus faber venere 2.5
    Sf venere center
    Oppo 105d

    Apc power filter
    Audioquest cables asst
    Polk rtia3 SB
    Polk fxia6 sl,sr
    Dual hsu vtf3 mk3

  • My ht is 16x18 roughly and the rti 5.1 fits very nicely. I've had a 7.2 in the last house in a 24x26 space, and it was better as it provided a greater sense of space. However, I feel the additional channels now, would make much difference as the space is more narrow.
Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. What is your budget first of all?

I would stat thinking all over. RTi are very good speakers but need power. Neither of your receiver choices will be that great with power hungry RTi. Maybe look at signature series

I just upgraded from a Sony 5700ES receiver to a Marantz SR5010. much better in HT than Sony. Nice sweet receiver http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/marsr5010/marantz-sr5010-7.2-ch-x-100-watts-networking-a/v-receiver/1.html

Is your ceiling drywalled yet? If not think about adding a pair of in ceiling speakers for Atmos/DTS-X http://www.bestbuy.com/site/polk-audio-6-5-2-way-in-ceiling-speaker-each-white/4669018.p?skuId=4669018

For sub please don't get a PSW10, The 505 is a good basic sub but this will be much better https://www.amazon.com/SVS-SB12-NSD-400-watt-Controlled-Subwoofer/dp/B009F8Y7SO/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1483292268&sr=1-1&keywords=svs

Of the 2 AVR's mentioned by lystation, I would go with the Pioneer.

Either of those AVR's will be adequate to drive RTI A5's. Two way speakers with no woofers, not a difficult load to drive.

Your room will be two small for a 7.x system. It's not a good idea to jam extra speakers into a system just to impress people. A well thought out and properly set up 5.x will sound and preform beyond your expectations.

I would recommend looking at different subs. The savings on the one pair of RTI A1's plus the initial cost of the PSW 10, will get you really close to a good quality sub. Try SVS Sound and look at the outlet page. Either of those 1000 series will out preform the PSW 10.

Remember to budget for wire and cabling, that stuff isn't included. Strongly recommend at least a surge protestor, but a power conditioner would be a vast improvement also.

Keep asking, and tell us your budget. People on this site love spending other people's money, but many know where to find bargains on both new and used stuff.

I think its good for a beginner. My personal preference would be stay away from sony receivers. Pioneer is okay but I would advise you to look at Denon or Marantz imo they are better. Having just gone thru a subwoofer upgrade I would advise to start with one from SVS...maybe the pb1000. Your room is not too small for a 7.1 system at all. My HT is in the basement which is medium size but the actual viewing area is about 11ft x 15ft. and I run a full 7.1.4 atmos system.
    Speakers: Polk - Front RtiA9 - Center Csi6 - Surrounds RtiA1 - Heights Sc60 - Sub Psw125 +SVS PB2000
    Power: Anthem MRX1120 11 ch. Atmos/dtsx receiver

Just to piggy back on this, a good surge protector/power conditioner to start with would be Panamax PM8-AV. It's $66 right now via Best Buy and it's a darn good bang for the buck.

Amazon is $45 for new not a refurb https://www.amazon.com/Panamax-PM8-AV-Outlet-Cable-Sat-Telephone-Silver/dp/B002UI8E4O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483318846&sr=8-1&keywords=PANAMAX+PM8-AV+8

If it was me starting from scratch I would go with Marantz receive from A4L, 5.1 signature speakers 2 forward in-ceiling speakers for front high (5.1.2) and a SVS or HSU sub.

The money you would save going to the signature series would allow for a better sub.
