New Marantz is IN Oh yeah

Hello,

So I got the stand all done, today was install day for the new refurb Marantz SR5010. New receiver does require a new stand.

I had time to watch about 30 of MI5 (ATMOS) Nice sound to it but for the intro I had to crank it up to 80. I like the intro on my Sony @ 0db. I did run the Audyssey setup it set everything way low. It set the sub even @ -12db everything else is set between -7 and -3db. It has my front right high @ 0db. On the first attempt the receiver shut off on position #4. I restarted it and it ran through setup fine.

I will mess with it later I have to jump on another Christmas project,

Looks great. Here's a few suggestions (I'm assuming this is mostly for HT):

1.) What do you have your sub volume set at. I would turn it down some. -12db is the lowest setting on the Marantz. At least so it ends up higher than -12. Then rerun Audyssey.
2.) The Marantz will set (usually) the front speakers to large after running Audyssey. Set all speakers to small and adjust the crossover settings. Typically 40-80 on the mains.
3.) Audyssey sets the subwoofer trim at the very low point. So I would increase it by 4-6 db to your liking.
4.) I'd also try pulling your speakers out a bit so they're not behind the entertainment center. See what sounds better to you.

Nice system. Sit back and enjoy.

Sub volume is between 9 and 10 on the clock.

I think something was wrong when Audyssey ran. I just watched the new Bourn flick and had to have the volume at 65. I stopped it have way and started my own playing with the receiver. I manually set all the speakers to 0db and made some adjustments from there. restarted the movie and cool.

I will re-run Audyssey during the week. Building the TV stand took away time for the few gifts I am building so the is priority 1 now. I got it dialed in so if I get to watch a movie on the fly I can and enjoy.

The new Bourn flick is in DTS-X and sounded great, I will have to watch it again once this id all dialed in.

Auto calibration generally does not mess up dB levels on speakers unless the speakers are set up in an off balanced way, the routine just takes what reaches the setup microphone. At most when I've checked using a handheld dB meter a speaker has been off by 0.5 to 1 dB and only because of room acoustics. Looks like the right front speaker is muffled out by being closer to the wall/subwoofer/stuffed animals/fan/plant/fireplace than the other speakers. So, not surprising its level is auto calibrated higher than the other speakers. That is a big SPL difference though and there may not be much that can be done with the room space. The system does look great, especially the stand.

Moving the plant, fan, and animals and bringing the speakers out a few inches and toed in a bit would probably clean up the problem for the most part.

I was reading the manual last night before bed, I will need to go through and dial it in.

Maybe the Audyssey mic it shipped with is bad, I will try using the mic my Onkyo came with and go through setup again. I have been looking for my setup notes on the Onkyo, that set everything perfect.

When I ran setup the fan was not there. crap the wife has ontop of the sub is impossible to get rid of.

There is a lot for me to have fun with, in just watching one movie I did notice better sound than my Sony. I still need to sit down and put on my 2112 SACD.

But for now back to the garage and building...one more quilt ladder to go.

So between coats of Poly this evening I sat down to dial in this receiver. I ran Audyssey with the mic that came with my Onkyo and it set everything different from before, all a little higher except the sub it left it @ -12db. I ran my test intro to MI5 and @ 0db it was lacking. I go the notes of the settings on my Sony and while looking for them found the Audyssey notes from my Onkyo. Everything was the same but 4db higher. so I moved all speakers up 4db, and the sub up 12db to 0db. Ran the test again and oh man yeah that's it! Funny when looking at my notes on the Onkyo it set the sub @ -12db too. Maybe Audyssey doesn't like HSU sub digging 16hz. Sony on the other hand would always set the sub @ +10db, weird, 0db and the sub is good.

    Still need to music test

So time to get these quilt ladders done and enjoy some movies.

For some strange reason when I first read your thread I thought of ladders made from quilts and this must be some type of decoration. After the poly statement I realize what you mean.

My mom makes quilts for disabled vet's and other charity org. A decent oak quilt ladder runs in the mid $250 range. I am building her two, one oak and one pine for less than $125 for both.

cant wait till after work going to test music while working if nobody is home. I can't play it as loud as I like when the kids are home, they don't like it. Sucks, when I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down, now I am an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down...

  • You should only use the mic that came with the marantz. Also if your previous onkyo used audyssey dynamic eq that can make a large difference.

The Onkyo and Marantz both came with the same mic. No difference between the two at all.

Okay. I have read on the audyssey site that the original mic must be used as they may be calibrated differently across the various models. However if they are the same then by all means carry on.

Glad it worked out for you...enjoy!

OK tomorrow I will look for part numbers on them. The Onkyo mic calibrated better than the Marantz mic did. When I found my notes I just set the Marantz to what the Onkyo calibrated at and all is good.

This is part of the fun of this, test, try get it sounding good and then test and try more and get it sounding better. Just remember to take notes as to where everything is set.

    It looks like your right;

I am looking at both mic's right now, they are both ACM1HB

but on the bottom they each have peal on stickers

    Onkyo 081313
    Marantz 010716

When I first set it up I used the Marantz mic, I didn't like how it set it all up. everything was way in the -db side. I had to go to like 90% to get it to pass the MI5 intor test.

I then re-ran setup with the Onkyo mic and it set it better. I went looking for my notes on what the Onkyo set everything at. I just manually set everything from there as the Onkyo set it all fantastic Sounds great now.

I might play with it this weekend

The odd thing is it set the sub @ -12db at that there was no bass at all. On the other end my Sony would set the sub @ +10db. way too much.

I had time yesterday before football to go through Audyssey set up again. This time I ran it twice, once with the Onkyo mic and once with the Marantz mic. They came out within 0.5db on all speakers, sub came out @ -12db even after I turned it down a hair. I went and adjusted to my Onkyo notes for the fronts which was to just add 4db to them. I then just added 4db to the rest of my speakers and set the sub @ -1db.

This so far has it dialed in very nice.
