Wildlife in the garage

This morning I am doing my daily “get ready for work” tasks, and one of those things is cleaning the cat litter boxes. I put the waste into a coffee container, and when it is full I empty it into a plastic grocery bag, and throw it away. This morning I filled up the container, so I go into the semi-dark garage, reach down for a bag, and see something dark move. Yikes!! I jerk back my hand, turn on the light, and see there is a possum on top of all the bags. LOL

I’m glad possums are docile creatures. If it had been a raccoon, skunk, or some other creature, it probably would have bit me. Then I would be getting rabies shots. :)

Lol....Possums are not docile creatures. They have razor sharp teeth, be glad he didn't bite you. Rabies shots are painful and numerous.

LOL. I'm not sure how he got it. Probably snuck in last night after I got home. Yesterday was trash day so after putting the car in the garage I cleaned both trash cans on the driveway, and then put them in the garage. I guess he snuck in then.

I don't remember doing the painters tape, but he sure did chew it for some reason. You can see the insulation I had installed a few years ago where it gets blown into the wall via holes they make. I guess there was a hole in the wall, and I covered it with the tape so the insulation wouldn't blow out.

This reminded me of a funny picture of a guy loading a stuffed dog into a recycling bin from a while ago but i can't seem to find it.
Then, i searched the interweb for dead animal recycling and now i'm sad.... :(

You can't typically recycle possums or pizza boxes.

You still haven't explained how you got him out...did you use the rope?

Coupla weeks ago -- the windshield washer in my RAV4 stopped squirtin'. Well, it stopped squirtin' on the windshield. It was happy to dribble onto the pavement.

The root cause was readily diagnosed when I raised the hood. There was a mouse sittin' on the plastic cowling (at the firewall) under the hood, lookin' at me. It then scurried down the 'hole' in the firewall into which the hood's driver's side hinge goes when the hood's closed. The aforementioned mus musculus had gnawed a hole into a tee-connector (an easy fix, fortunately).

    Blighter.

I set a trap on the cowling.

Within a couple of hours, the mousey had been converted to an erstwhile mousey.

Figured I'd better set it again & see if there were any more.

Caught four of them suckas before - apparently - I'd cleared out (at least the ambulatory ones).

    Yes, vermin.

I opened the garage door and moved my car out, since he was behind it. My thought was I was then going to hit the trash can with a boom handle until it ran outside. However, I ended up carefully picking up the trash can and slowly moved it outside. I then tipped it over and he scurried off into the yard.

I was hunting and came upon a cow carcass, yet from a short distance it appeared to be breathing. Anyway I walked up on it and several opossum poked their heads out of the carcass watching me and hissing. They had literally eaten the cow from the inside out. What I had mistaken for breathing of course were the critters moving around inside it.

Factoid... Opossums are the only marsupial in North America. If you ever saw one carrying its babies around you would be impressed. They are usually not going to attack you unless they are rabid. They do have some sharp teeth though. My ex bro in law caught one in his garage one night and he just gabbed it by the tail and it never showed any aggressiveness. He will find his way back in if you don't plug it up. Surprised the cats let it in... unless of course they were aiding and abetting.

Mark - we're fighting the SAME battle. We live on a large wooded lot and have a 3 car detached garage. We noticed signs of mice in both our vehicles. I bought and set a trap in each vehicle last night and this morning, we've already caught one mouse in each car. Not much we can do about it where we live. It seems to be an annual ritual when the weather starts to turn cold! We'll just keep resetting the trap until we think we've gotten them all.

I had an experience like Motorhead's a few years ago. I was cross country skiing in the woods shortly after deer hunting season ended. Every year I find a few deer that were wounded by a loser who took a crappy shot and then didn't feel like getting down out of their stand to track the deer if it didn't drop right on the spot. So, here I am, skiing along with a friend and I see antlers sticking up out of the snow. I ski up alongside and see its a nice big ten pointer. I decide to go back and get a hack-saw to cut off the horns. When we return to the deer, I tell my friend to hold onto the antlers while I cut. When he grabs the horns, we hear a weird growling noise that seems to come from inside the deer. My friend jumps back. I grab the antlers and pull the upper torso up out of the snow. Suddenly, a small head sticks up from the butt end of the deer. Its a possum, and its giving us this look like, "What the heck is going on here?" Then I realize the possum is living inside the deer's body cavity. He had burrowed in from the rear, which is now his "back door" Lol. We were shocked upon seeing the creature, and decided to quickly cut off the horns and leave. The possum was going to live in the cavity all winter and eat from the inside out, so to speak. Probably fairly warm in there, just had to defend its property every once in a while.
