Polk SRT Subwoofer Driver Repair

I had Polk repair a set of SRT subwoofer drivers (re-glued spiders) a couple years ago and was very pleased with the results. I offered to pay for the work but Polk was kind enough to do it for no charge.

I purchased a second SRT system a few months later to build an awesome 10.2 set-up and just like all of the SRT subs, the spiders were loose in the drivers causing a "rattle". For the past 15 months I have been trying to get Polk to repair these but they say they no longer have the dust covers so they can't do it. I offered to pay whatever it took to repair the drivers but never received a response back.

So after 15 months it looks like Polk is not going to be able to repair these. Does anyone else know of anyone who professionally-repairs drivers?

Check out millersound. I'd be surprised if they were not capable of doing it.

Thanks for the response. I have never heard of them so I Googled "Millersound" and gave them a call. The guy told me he has never seen Polk SRTs and isn't sure he can repair the drivers but thinks he probably can. He said that when the spiders come loose there can also be damage to the coils and asked me what all Polk had to replace when they did my other pair and I told him I did not know what all they did.

The good news is Millersound is 28 miles from my house so I can just drive there and drop the drivers off.

I would have preferred to have these repaired by Freeman at Polk but they claim they don't have the parts to do it anymore. When I asked what the parts were they said the dust covers so hopefully that's all that is involved.

Dustcaps are not critical. I mean, sure it would be nice to keep them all original in appearance, but any similar dust cap will work fine. Bill will treat you right.
  • Hey Gate, just wondering if you were able to drop off the drivers to get repaired. I still have that RT5K, it's setup in a spare bedroom that's going to converted into a family room. The setup will remain. The 4 SRT's with the RT3K rear surrounds and the PSW1200subs are still in the main living room.

  • Polk will no longer repair the drivers? Freeman did mine and are still 100%. I'm worried, if they disloge later on, I'll have to seek a speaker repair shop.

I'll probably take them there right after the holidays. At that time I will re-cap the amps.

I have my two SRT systems set-up as a 10.2 using the SC-09TX and two Polk SRT control centers. Two SRT center speakers, four SRT satellites & subs, four f/x1000 surrounds, and two PSW650 subs.

Subscribing to this. I had my first set of SRTs repaired a year and half ago or so by Polk, then found another set that I've been trying to restore and have run into the same issue as you.. in that Polk no longer has the parts for the repairs. I'm kicking myself for not getting the second set prepped and repaired earlier, but I took for granted that they've been doing repairs for free to the SRTs since their inception over 20 years ago! Luckily, I'm not some ignorant SOB who's going to **** and moan about how Polk no longer provides parts or service to the SRTs. I wouldn't have expected it in the first place. With a mass produced and marketed speaker, yes. With a limited run, super rare to begin with, specialty speaker...hell no. If you ask me they honestly shouldn't have EVER had ANY extra parts for these 5 years or more after production. They're LIMITED people. For a reason. Treat them as well as you can or accept the consequences of your actions...that's your warranty!
Too many good quotes to list..waiting for some fresh ammo. :)

So........ does that mean you don't plan to attempt to repair your second set?

That's what it sounds like you're telling us.

Not me. Having experienced these speakers after repairing them I plan to do everything I can to get the second set fixed too.

Not at all. I'm definitely keeping them and repairing them. I'll toy around with alternative subwoofer drivers if the original polk ones can't be repaired anymore. I'll probably go with Infinity Kappa Perfect 10's in their place and amp externally, unless I find something else as appealing as that.

The repair isn't actually all that difficult. Just be careful with how and where you apply the adhesive to the spiders. Better than the alternative of finding appropriate replacement drivers. I'm surprised that the dustcap is the only reason Polk isn't repairing these anymore. The drivers are internal to the box and never seen unless the amp plate is removed. It isn't critical to the function of the driver but maybe Polk just doesn't want to warrant any work that isn't 100%.

10.2 of SRT's and FX1000's. Wow that must be a room filled with sound and thunder! :) I enjoyed the SRT's when I had them. Hope you are able to get them 100% again soon.

I'm in the process of trying to get the drivers professionally repaired. Hopefully they will turn-out OK.

I used to have a 10.2 system made of 2xRT5000s and it was pretty-awesome but I upgraded to 2xSRT subs, sats, and centers a while back retaining the four f/x1000s I had.

I have two SRT SDA control centers. My SC-09TX (10.2 AVR) has enough power to comfortably drive the passive speakers although they will handle a lot more.

In addition to the above, I also use two PSW650 subs connected to LFE from the AVR.

The system is awesome even with two of the SRT subs turned down to prevent the "rattle". It should be even better once I get the damaged drivers back from repair.
