I would probably go with the Yammy. Wouldn't count on many discounts until a little closer to Christmas, but sometimes you get lucky with a 4 or 12 hour sale. B/B has those things all the time as well as Amazon 24 hour.

If I happen to run across one of them on sale will post it here.

You can always make another $200 but once you choose an AVR you aren't going to stop wondering "what if" without making another $700.

I'd take the RX-A1050 out of those but you'll find proponents of both, they're all good and I don't think you'd be ultimately disappointed with any choice.

In case you're curious about reliability at all, my RX-A1020 has been powered on 24/7 for closing in on two years now with no issues. I only shut it off if there's lightning or I leave home for more than a work shift. No HDMI issues, no "that was weird, what just happened" issues, or anything like that.

    Cool thanks,

I am thinking of going with the 1050 refurb.

When I worked at Sony and they had the service center here in San Diego refurb was the way to go. I have at work an old circa 2000 Sony receiver that has been rocking my warehouse for over 10 years. Once Sony moved the refurb center to Mexico around 2004 we saw the quality go way down.

I will roll the dice this time as I don't have the dollars needed for "New".

Oh and I don't think the wife will get to pissed at the $170 I will have to use from checking. I just made a storage chest for her friend who paid $250 for it. Bummer I wanted Amazon gift card but they gave us a check.

    One other question

How are the Yamaha RX-A receivers on RTi speakers? At Fry's they have the RTi's in the room with the lower end RX-V receivers. Those do seem to be nice and warm sounding.

If you think that RTi's on a Yamaha RX-V AVR sound nice and warm you'll be surprised what the RX-A1050 will do for them. By all accounts RTi speakers on an RX-V AVR should sound bright, bright, bright. The RX-A1050 will be over on the warm side of neutral.

you must remember I have been using Sony ES forever... and yes they are bright to blinding.

oh man and I am almost ready to pull the trigger on the RX-A1050

The SR5010 is within my budget and has Atmos and DTS-X...

What to get...thing is I don't want to be sitting here thinking of should have...?

I'd choose the Yamaha. I purchased
the second generation Aventage 1010, and have never regretted it. It always works correctly, doesn't do anything weird, and sounds fantastic. I believe they have upgraded the DACs since, so the 1050 likely sounds a little better.

What's wrong with Onkyo? All Onkyo, or just at this level?

I don't know for sure if there is anything wrong with Onkyo, I was ready to pull the trigger on a 747 unit till I posted this thread. The one thing I do know is I went to Frys and had a listen. The Onkyo 757 has the same problem as my 626 on music, just seems to lacking. My $249 626 blows away my $1500 (I paid $500) Sony ES on movies.

    So after this post I have narrowed it down to either the;

Marantz SR5010 which is in budget and I don't have to worry about the wife getting pissed

Yamaha RX-A1050 just out of budget, I would have to dig into checking so the wife will get a little pissed.

  • I'd hold of then. The price of the 1050 will come down. I purchased my 1010 from a4l about three years ago for $550.

Question, are you running a 5.1 setup? If so, and if you have no plans on going further than that, then you probably wouldn't benefit from Atmos or DTS:X much.

7.1 with front high in ceiling.

I could pull the trigger today, the money my wife has spent B/F shopping she could not say crud if I spent $150 from checking.

The biggest problem I have with Onkyo is AccuEQ doesn't calibrate the front 2 speakers.

Poor reliability compared to the competition.

  • I've had two mid-tier (7xx) onkyos in the recent past. One was a complete failure the other started out great and started being weird after six months. I sold it within the first year and do not regret it. Another member here had the same model with much larger issues. So yeah they seem to have reliability issues, which are well documented around the web.

So I will think about it for the weekend. It's either the Marantz 5010 or RX-A1050.

I have to start my Christmas builds next weekend so time will be short....
