Moving to Los Angeles and looking to rent a room

I was laid off 4 months ago and just received an offer for a job in downtown LA (300 S Spring St). The tentative starting date is Dec 12.
I understand that LA traffic is bad. I don't want to spend more than 45 minutes commute each way. I need to find a room to stay for maybe up to 6 months while looking to rent/buy a more permanent place.
What areas are good, decent, bad around my job place? Do you know if anyone that might have a room for rent?
Thanks in advance for your advices.

Future welcome to the West Coast!

I haven't been here long enough to offer exact thoughts, and I'm still living in a hotel room honestly, so take this for what it's worth.

I believe Mid-Wilshire and Culver City are decent areas that are within your commute range. Anything close, convenient, and in a nice neighborhood will be pricy, just the way it is out here. I'm looking for a garden apartment or something similar, if you're patient you can find a good deal on one of them around here anyway (Westwood).

There's a pay website, West Side Rentals, supposed to be the best place to look for a room/apartment from what I've been told by all the locals around here. I hope that helps!

edit: And yes, traffic is bad. That's no lie. These people don't walk anywhere, even a few blocks, LA drives. I will say though, at least it moves, slowly... 10-15mph, OTOH Boston was a maddening 0-5mph in traffic. I hate stop and go.

^^MB, you liking the West Coast? Has it turned out to be a good decision for you?

Thanks MrBuhl for the insights. There are several rooms for rent in or near korea town that I like. But when I researched for areas to avoid, someone mentioned to avoid the Korea town. Is mid-Wilshire part of Korea town?

So far so good Motorhead, thanks. I really love LA honestly, so much to do, and contrary to popular belief I find it's not all about smog and traffic, I hike and bike every weekend, hit the beach or a concert, lots of outdoor & healthy living within very close proximity. There is a great show almost every night. The weather is perfect for whatever you want to do every day. And... I have no commute, or rent yet, so the two big negatives are non-issues until summer time comes.

OTOH, We elected not to move the girls, so the hard part is being solo away from them, I go home every three weeks or less, and we spend the holidays (Birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc etc) together as a family. Looking at moving the whole family when the school year is over and things settle down. Funny thing is, I get more of their attention on our nightly Facetime call than I do when I'm at home (or was at home even). So - in the end it seems to be working for us. After 21 years, this is the third or fourth time the wife and I have done this for a period of a several months though, so I think we're well practiced at it and that helps a lot.

edit: And for that matter, the job is literally everything I had dreamed it would be, so that helps too!
